According to a new Pew Research poll (PDF) of registered voters in the upcoming congressional election, 45 percent are leaning Democratic while 44 percent are leaning Republican. This does not bode well for Democrats, since they need to be have a significant lead in the generic ballot if they hope to hold onto their large majorities in the House and Senate. At the same time, these numbers don’t point to a massive Republican wave. By comparison, at about this same time in 2006, Democrats led Republicans 50 percent to 39 percent.

A new PPIC poll of California shows slim leads for Democrats Jerry Brown and Barbara Boxer. The looming cloud is Prop. 23, an effort by big oil companies to suspend the state’s strong climate-change law. Although support for the proposition is weak, the companies’ millions may be able to buy plenty of votes before November.

In addition to finding very positive numbers for Proposition 19, PPP also recently polled the Senate and Governor contests in California. In both races, the Democrat had a single-digit but statistically significant lead over the Republican challengers.
