Polling indicates Brown poses a serious challenge to Shaheen in the general election. According to a PPP poll from January, Shaheen holds only a three point lead over Brown. Since he polls the best of any of the potential Republican nominees in New Hampshire, the GOP’s chances of taking the Senate have improved marginally today.
First though, Brown would need to win what is increasingly become a crowded primary. He currently holds a big lead among likely primary voters but that is probably just a product of his high name recognition. In the primary Brown would be vulnerable to attacks on his more moderate stances and being labeled a carpetbagger.
