Today the Clinton Presidential Center is releasing thousands of pages of new documents from the former administration on their website. The Presidential Records Act allows certain documents to be withheld for 12 years after the end of the Presidency.
Normally the release of documents from a presidential archive would not bring much attention outside academic circles, but Hillary Clinton makes this situation unique. Instead of this just being a historic look back at a president’s tenure, these documents will provide insight into a possible future president.
Many of the documents released today relate to Hillary Clinton’s time as First Lady. They include documents about her work on health care reform, micro development, Women’s right issues, and also about her press office.
This just the first of many batches of Clinton era documents which should be released over the coming weeks. Expect them to become a major focus of the press in the short term and to play a big role in the 2016 campaign if Hillary Clinton decides to run.
