A set of dueling announcements has kicked off what should be one of the most interesting and heavily contested primaries of 2014. Late Tuesday Senator Mike Enzi (R-Wyoming) announced that he was planning to run for a fourth senate term. Almost immediately afterwards Liz Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, announced she would be challenging him in the Republican primary. Her campaign released the following video making the case for her run.
Since moving to Wyoming Cheney has been laying the ground work for this run partly based on the assumption that Enzi was seriously thinking about retiring. Yet when it became clear Enzi was going to run again Cheney quickly decided she wouldn’t wait another few years for an open seat. She has kicked off a primary battle between two of the most powerful Republican families in the state.
With her family connections Cheney is assured to be a strong fundraiser but there doesn’t seem to be a likely reason for Wyoming Republicans to get rid of Enzi who has consistently been a strong conservative.
