Newly elected Senator Ed Markey (D-MA)

Democrat Ed Markey will soon be the newest member of the United States Senate. As expected last night he won the Massachusetts special election to fill the remainder of Secretary of State John Kerry’s term.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting Markey received 54.8 percent while his Republican opponent Gabriel Gomez got 44.8 percent. This is right inline with the final set of polling for the race.

For a first time Republican politician running statewide in Massachusetts,  Gomez actually did relatively well but couldn’t overcome the strong Democratic leanings of the state. His decent performance though might encourage him to run in a future election.

Markey will have only a short respite before he needs to start hitting the campaign trail again. Markey will now need to run for a full term in 2014.
