NYC Mayoral Candidate Anthony Weiner

Since Anthony Weiner officially announced his return to politics, his support in the New York mayoral race has grown significantly. According to a new Marist poll, he is now in second place, trailing Christine Quinn by only five points in the Democratic primary. From Marist:

Among registered Democrats in New York City, including those who are undecided yet leaning toward a candidate, if the Democratic primary were held today, here is how the contest would stand:

  • 24% Christine Quinn
  • 19% Anthony Weiner
  • 12% Bill de Blasio
  • 11% Bill Thompson
  •   8% John Liu
  •   1% Sal Albanese
  • <1% Erick Salgado
  •   1% Other
  • 23% Undecided

This is a significant improvement since April. When Marist last polled the race it found Quinn had an 11 point lead.

Luckily for Quinn, in New York City if no candidate gets more than 40 percent of the vote in the first round, the race goes to a runoff. While Weiner does well in a crowded primary, in a head-to-head matchup Quinn leads Weiner 48 percent to 33 percent. Quinn in fact leads all her potential rivals by double digits.
