Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer

While many prominent groups on the left are urging former governor Brian Schweitzer (D) to run for the Montana Senate seat Max Baucus (D) is retiring from Schweitzer still hasn’t officially announced his plans. If he does decide to run he will start off as the clear favorite. A new Harper poll shows him leading ahead of all of the most likely Republican nominees.

According to the poll the closest race would be between Schweitzer and former Governor Marc Racicot. In the battle of the two former governors Schweitzer leads 47 percent to 43 percent.

If Schweitzer faced off against the state’s lone member of the House of Representatives, Steve Daines, his lead would expand to 10 points. In that race it is Schweitzer 50 percent to Daines 40 percent. Finally, the poll found Schweitzer would have a massive 25 point lead over former Senator Corey Stapleton.

Baucus’s decision to step down may turn out to be very good news for Democrats assuming Schweitzer chooses to run. The poll not only found that Schweitzer has a very good shot of winning but he is also significantly more popular than Baucus. While Baucus’ net favorability rating is negative, Schweitzer has respectable rating of 54 percent favorable to 37 percent unfavorable.
