By a greater than 3 to 1 margin the American people see the Republican party as out of touch with the concerns of regular people. According to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll only 23 percent of adults see the party as in touch, while an incredible 70 percent see the party as out of touch.
What is truly remarkable is that even a plurality of self-identified Republicans call their own party out of touch. Among Republican 42 percent see the GOP as in touch while 49 percent say it is out of touch. This is a sign of an organization with serious problems. At least the members of party see there is a problem, which will be a prerequisite for any serious reform.
While the numbers for the Democratic party on this question are objectively not good, by comparison they look great. The poll found 43 percent see the Democratic party as in touch with concerns of regular people while 51 percent see the party as out of touch. Unlike the Republican base the Democratic base gives their own party very high marks. Among Democrats 78 percent see their party as in touch with regular people.
