Former Democratic Senator Russ Feingold is apparently not pulling any punches as the founder of Progressives United. In an email to supporters about the Amgen subsidy in the fiscal cliff deal, Feingold called out Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT) by name for being part of the corruption that permeates government:
Amgen’s strategy to achieve this coup was certainly brilliant — and a perfect example of the kind of corruption that permeates our government and cripples public trust.
On one side of the revolving door, Amgen hired lobbyists who had been chiefs of staff to the senators most able to do Amgen’s bidding: Finance Committee leaders Max Baucus (MT) and Orrin Hatch (UT) along with Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (KY).
On the other side, one of the top aides assembling the bill for Senator Hatch was a former Amgen analyst — and he met with representatives from his old employer in constructing the unfair provision.
Feingold’s email goes on to suggest that Baucus, Hatch and McConnell were essentially bought and paid for by Amgen:
Amgen’s PAC and employees have spent huge amounts — roughly $60,000 to $75,000 — to fund each of the campaigns of these three influential senators. This is a textbook case of a corporation that, at a minimum, appears to be buying the policies that give it a special break.
It is highly unusual for a former senator to target a fellow member of their party in such direct manner. Especially when that senator is up for re-election soon and potentially could face a very tough primary and/or general election.
This language should definitely hit a nerve with the Baucus camp because he significantly damaged his favorable numbers thanks to his role in drafting the Affordable Care Act. One of the big complaints about that law was also that it contained a sweetheart deal for the drug industry.
It’s hard to imagine a world where a Baucus opponent wouldn’t use this against him.

Good for Russ Feingold. It sometimes takes an insider to tell the hard truths about what’s happening within the Crazy Palace that is the Capitol.
Now, if only this information (and lots of other information like it) would spill over into the MSM. Baucus is just another garden-variety dirtbag with way too much power and influence. If someone from the right does choose to use the information against him, they’d effectively be precluding the possibility that they might become the future beneficiary of such largesse. Hence, they’d have to be very careful about such an attack was framed. If he was attacked from his left flank, however…
Is the nytimes going to pick up this story? Oh. Nothing to see here…move along.
Baucus is one of the slimier people in Congress. Glad Russ named him.
Well, good on Feingold fror not giving the old bald face lie that,”it’s those GOP that are corrupt and shameless.”and recognizing that Democrats
have played a substantial role in fostering corruption.
Now,too bad he won’t loudly wonder how is it that 2yrs after BClinton left the WH is assets went from 50,000.00 to over 50-mil…….
Hmmmmm…
And look for the guy who is the current Prez to get super wealthy just as BClinton…..as a matter of fact even before the current Prez became a Senator he was doing under-hand business with Tony Rezko.
Anyone remember that…..and then we wonder how is it that we(ordinary Americans) are being screwed.
But…but…Baucus has a (D) after his name. We can’t criticize him!
How difficult is it to imagine a world where the political class, which includes the media, would not Baucus, “the people”, civil society, and the nation into austerity corners while “waging” cripplingly expensive, perpetual endless war and protecting and declaring, “not illegal”, the criminal fraud of Banksters, “too-big-to-jail”?
So long as we’re “hard” at imagining things.

“Best government money can buy”???????
I disagree.
I don’t wonder at all. Bet you don’t either. SOme of this corruption os so visble, even Stevie Wonder can see it.
I’m beginning to see that the “Change” Obama promised is never gonna happen.
That’s why this will be effectively ignored by the media. Whereas, anytime Joe Lieberman slags Democrats for being too liberal, there are always at least six or seven Big Media mikes transmitting those words to our radios and TVs.
“Best” being a relative term but I disagree “with” you. Baucus was Obama’s choice to head up ACA wasn’t he? Tells us allot.
Don’t worry, the media will ignore this because it comes from the left and it’s true. Now if Ben Nelson or Joe Lieberman accused Baucus of being too liberal and/or having yellowcake in his possession, the dutiful stenographers of the .01% would ensure it hit our front pages and was the lead story on every newscast for the next week.
I love the idea of getting rid of Max Baucus. AFAIC, he’s the major reason for the horrors of the ACA, and his delays made it harder to pass it, too (for whatever good parts it has). (no, I don’t relieve Obama of the responsibility of turning ACA over to Baucus).
What’s Schweitzer like? Equally bad? Bad in a different way? At this point, I’d have to prefer him, I guess, to the kind of batshitcrazy R who could get nominated. But by all means, let’s get rid of Baucus.
And thank you, Russ, for naming names.
Just looking at Max makes me want to take a shower.
Well said…
You didn’t read the fine print under the word CHANGE it says from 20th century poverty to 15th century poverty.
What took ya so long?!? :P ;)
Yes! but lets not forget, the point man on that was Tom Daschle going(nominated) to HHS,then when it was revealed that Daschle was on the take,Obama then made Baucus is point-man.
The whole leadership of the Democratic party is corruption central.
Until hundreds or possibly thousands are dying in the streets, people will continue to vote for either of the two evil criminal parties.
Schweitzer is miles better than “Mad” Max. I know energy is one area Schweitzer isn’t great on. But then “Mad” Max isn’t any better. Schweitzer believes in Single-payer. And Schweitzer loves sticking it to the GOP.
Speaking as a Montanan, Baucus needs to be primaried hard. Right now, the only likely contender is our ex-governor, Brian Schweitzer. He is not as beholden to corporate interests as Baucus is, though he is no more progressive.
Awww.. lighten up on poooor Max.. after all.. when Max was slapping the cuffs on those annoying Medicare For All advocates, he was arranging Medicare For All for the folks in Libby, Montana..
Who else involved in the Health Care Triumph actually expanded Medicare?
No One..
Max stands profiled against the sun setting behind the Rockies, square jawed and Heroic, an Inspiration to all..
A Baucus election defeat would force the man to advance his big private-sector lobbying payday by years, completely throwing off his schedule. Can you be so cruel?
The name of the President changed.
The Democratic PTB don’t primary incumbents, especially DINO incumbents.
I regret that I must defend Baucus on the Medicare for all issue. Obama ruled that out during his 2008 campaign.
Obama had campaigned on a public option. However, he and his WH staff began meeting with health insurers, big health care and pharmaceutical reps as soon as he got elected, if not before.
I think the broad outlines of the bill were decided before even Baucus and Collins began their dirty deeds.
My two favorite U.S. Senators were Feingold and Sanders.
And then there was one.
When Sanders was Mayor of Burlington, Vermont, the Democrats and the Republicans both tried hard to unseat him. Finally, they actually joined forces and ran a single candidate against him. With both major political parties backing his opponent, Sanders still won re-election.
This makes me remember why I liked Feingold so much.
Vermont is the Live free or die state…..How is it that the people of Vermont are accepting of Senator Leahy.
Leahy is the chair of Judiciary committee….I guess he really doesn’t believe in live free or die motto. He was Obama’s point-man on NDAA.So the Prez can now hold anyone in Vermont in custody for how long he wants.
Impressive!
Uh New Hampshire is Live Free or Die. Vermont is the Green Mountain State
It was a simple typo, should have read, “No Hope for Change”.
There must be a grey matter gap in the good folks of Wisconsin to have not kept this guy. Move on down to Illinois Russ we’ll find a place for you. How would you like to be mayor of Chicago? If that doesn’t appeal how about Governor?
x2
Mike Grebe’s Bradley Foundation and Journal Communications just crushed him. Very sad day for the Badger state.
Interesting stuff there on Sanders. Clue to everyone how much they hate us and WE HATE THEM for their actions. Recognizing that, we must forthwith join forces and return their faithlessness. Very important to call them out— every time, all the time- to get them out of our town. Thank you, Sen. Feingold! And damn, they are ugly!
NY Times was on to this weeks ago http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/20/us/medicare-pricing-delay-is-political-win-for-amgen-drug-maker.html?pagewanted=all
Please read ypmc’s link to the NY Times piece which goes into detail as to what is so heinous about this loophole. People can be physically hurt by this besides the obvious rip off of Medicare. Remember this when the push to “strengthen” Medicare and SS comes.
As well, montanmaven, the link to Bill Moyers, provided by DSWright in his post, “Amgen Subsidy in ‘Fiscal Cliff’ Deal Under Fire”, is well worth a close listen.
