Up until now every single time the issue of marriage equality has appeared on a statewide ballot it has been rejected by voters, but next week Washington State may break the pattern. The voters in the state are deciding the fate of Referendum 74. Voting yes on R-74 would legalize same sex marriage. Two new polls at this week both show the R-74 with majority support.
Washington State – Referendum 74
Washington Poll (10/18-31)
Yes 57.9%
No 36.9%
Undecided 4.8%
Will not vote on this issue 0.4%
Washington State – Referendum 74
SurveyUSA (10/28-31)
Yes 52%
No 43%
Not Sure 5%
The Washington Poll found support for R-74 growing modestly. Their poll from the beginning of October had it at 54.1% yes to 38.4% no. On the other hand, SurveyUSA found support fading slightly. Their poll from two weeks ago had it at 54% yes to 41% no. I suspect the small movement in both polls is most likely statistical noise and that support for the R-74 is stable.

Opposed as I am to having fundamental civil rights voted on at the ballot box, it would be precious to deny NOM and their bigot-allies their last talking point: that voters have never, when given the option, approved marriage equality.
Maggie Gallagher and Brian Brown at NOM are pulling out all the stops, though, so people in the four marriage-equality-vote states need to vote early and get others to vote as well. NOM is spending another half-million dollars in MN, WA, MD and ME just this week. They cannot afford to lose this, as it’s their last (invalid) argument: given the option, voters don’t approve ‘redefining marriage.’
(I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m seeing HRC’s ads splashed nicely on the page today.)
Marco Rubio makes gay-bashing calls to states without marriage on the ballot, just be sure swing state voters know what kind of President Mitt will be (Aravosis):
I already voted for R-74 and I’m very hopeful it will pass.
But once marriage equality and recreational marijuana pass, what wedge issues will Washington’s corporate-sycophant Democratic Party use to con Washington “liberals” into overlooking our grossly regressive tax system? Don’t get me wrong. I’m thrilled to see an end to yet another form of state-sanctioned bigotry — but I’m equally thrilled to see our establishment Democrats lose some of the social-issue window dressing that they’ve been using to distinguish themselves from Republicans.
