The first Presidential debate this week drew an estimated 67.2 million viewers making it the most watched Presidential debates in decades, according to data from Nielsen.
An estimated 67.2 million people watched Democratic incumbent President Barack Obama debate Republican challenger Gov. Mitt Romney in the first presidential debate on Wednesday, October 3. [...]
Viewership to last night’s debate was up 28 percent compared to the first presidential debate in 2008 between then Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain.
The last time more than 67 million people watched a Presidential debate was back in 1984. This Presidential election has been marked by relatively weak enthusiasm and an unusually large percentage of voters unsatisfied with the choices, but that apparently hasn’t translated into people simply tuning out the election. Many Americans are engaged in the election even if they are disappointed with it.
Mitt Romney clearly chose a good day to finally step up his game.

Anheuser-Busch is a sponsor of the debates and throws their own corporate eagle up there behind our presidential candidates. They are foreign owned btw.

Can’t our corporate masters even keep their junk off the stage of the presidential debate?
We have the answer to that don’t we. I would like to know if the rating broke down how many people watched the debate on Democracy Now! with the pauses so Jill Stein and Rocky Anderson could answer the same questions. Otherwise the debate was another waste of time with the only real difference between the candidates being their golf handicap. Green Party’s Green New Deal and Justice Party’s WPA stimulus made logical sense using real facts. Don’t know how to describe the BS from Romney/Obama.
Great idea…And now it appears that the candidates should have to pass thru some sort of screening similar to airport security. There shall not be notes…..or voice support. What a world….
people were watching to see Romney eaten alive. they wanted blood. it has little to do with politics IMO.
x2
Yes, have one of those TSA scanners right between the debaters and have them pass thru it before the debate starts for all to see.
Willard will prolly have some excuse not be scanned. Him being not one of the 47% u know.
The elite don’t get scanned.
He wouldn’t know what it is and probably would walk right through it.
Also a good time for Obama to make clear that he and Romney have a “similar position” on Social Security.
All things considered, I would prefer each of them to have notes and whatnot so that they can actually present well thought out positions. When it comes to the real world, there will be notes, advisors, staff, senior types all there to make sure that any decision considers every aspect of the problem. I amnot sure why we forbid notes, unless it is to look for a gotcha moment instead of a serious discussion and presentation of two very different ideas of governance.
Obama killed bin Laden, but Romney will get Big Bird!
What a relief! Obama hates the 47% too.
It’s not a debate when both participants are tools of the same corporatists and agree on the majority of topics.
I view it as a positive that Obama attempted to disabuse people of the mistaken belief that he will not make cuts to Social Security.
I agree. The Romney side wanted to see that scrawny black socialist answer for his high crimes and treasons and the not-Romney side wanted to see if Romney would fall over the podium a-la-Chevy Chase in SNL or say “I don’t owe YOU PEOPLE my private tax returns. I’m Mitt Romney.”
Sadly, both sides lost.
That Big Bird thing is likely to come back and bite him in the ass. Most of Americans like PBS. The government contribution is practically imperceptible. What a douche. Did someone tell him to say that or did he come up with on his own?
Why should they?
It’s like getting ready to go to camp.
You put your name on each and every one of your possessions so everyone knows who they belong to.
The Presidency is no different.
How many people do you think even knew that the debate was airing on Democracy Now?
For that matter, how many people do you think ever heard of Democracy Now?
How did that work for them?
Obama watched a tv set while the Navy Seals killed Bin Laden and Obama and his family were being guarded by the Secret Service.
It’s not exactly the same.
