Polling has consistently found that President Obama has the edge over Mitt Romney when it comes to character traits such as likability, honesty and empathy. Obama also has long held a big lead regarding who would best handle social issues. Basically, the only thing Mitt Romney had going for him was that he was perceived as best able to handle the economy, which is the issue voters care most about. After the conventions, however, Romney seems to have lost his main advantage.
The post-convention polling shows Obama is now tied or even slightly ahead of Romney on the issue of who would be best for the economy. The CNN poll found among likely voters, 50 percent think Obama would be best able to handle the economy compared to 49 percent for Romney. Just a week earlier, Romney had the edge with 51 percent believing Romney would be better for the economy, and 45 percent chosing Obama.
The new Washington Post/ABC News poll has similar results. Among registered voters they found 47 percent think Obama would do a better job with the economy, while 45 percent chose Romney. This is a huge swing from three weeks ago when Romney’s lead on this question was 50 percent to 43 percent for Obama.
What is amazing about this turn around is that while voters now give Obama a slight edge on the issue, they still believe Obama has done a sub-par job with the economy during his first term. The same Washington Post/ABC News poll found that Obama’s job approval rating on the economy is a disappointing 45 percent approval to 53 percent disapproval. That is only slightly improved from three weeks ago when it was 43/56.
With official unemployment still over 8 percent, the Obama campaign hasn’t been able to convince voters that he has done a good job handling the economy. Even so, the Romney campaign has failed to make the case that Romney could do any better.

Not remarkable at all. Anyone watching the RNC and who wasn’t totally already in the tank for Romney was probably freaked out, and not just by Clint Eastwood’s subpar delivery of Team Romney talking points.
Remember how in 1992 Pat Buchanan in essence scared much of the country into voting for Bill Clinton? This is what we’re looking at here — except this time out, a non-trivial part of the key GOP infrastructure is made up largely of Buchanans.
It’s been fun watching him try to backtrack though. All of sudden he isn’t going to be giving all those tax breaks to job creators( also known as the very rich since as the GOP loves to point out a poor person never gave anyone a job) and instead is going to give them to middle class Americans.
He was for it before he was against the principle of being in favor of being against it retroactively.
Needz moar tax cutz.
some folk here might discover that a non-trivial group from the largest growing political party in the nation – “Former Democrat” – is made up largely of thinking, genuinely progressive people who have had more than enough of Obama’s treason.
Couldn’t have said it better myself.
I honestly don’t think this race is even gonna be close.
Except where it conflicted with a previously stated or implied position that may have been contrary or unclear.
LOL.
You may have missed the memo. We are now the Frog Party. (as in “boiling frogs”.)
It has been rather amusing, hasn’t it?
Exactamundo.
Politician speak is so nuanc-y.
I thought that the removal of God and Jerusalem from the Democrats’ Party Platform was staged to let Obama sweep in to save the day. Backfired.
But it looks now like the real objective was to get Romney to pivot from talking about the economy to talking about not taking the word God off our coins. Worked like a charm.
It’s almost as if the trickle-down economic theory had a bad track record, or something.
I’ve always said that the 1% want Obama to “win.”
The Kabuki Show called “Republican Primary” was patently absurb – even by TeaGOP standards. TeaGOPers, the largest part of which are super fundies, are now being asked to support a Mormon, not to mention that even the dullest witted TeaGOPers are starting to cotton onto the whole 99% v 1% con job, esp Trickle Down & cutting taxes for “job creators.”
I think the TeaGOP is just phoning it in. Why not? Obama’ll do their job for them just fine! Just like he’s done for the past 3+ years.
The religious rt. doesn’t like either RMONEY or his Catholic Choir boy Lyin Ryan. They want a southern Baptist for King.
Well ,isn’t that a shame. As far as I’m aware that makes them out of luck
Apparently, they didn’t get the Rumsfeldian memo that “you go to the ballot box with the candidates you have, not the candidates you wish you had.”
Here’s to hoping they sit out anyway since many of them are selfish and hypocritical and could do with being ignored for a few years.
“I stand by what I said, whatever it was.” Willard Mitt Romney
(A direct quote, not a joke.)
If you could fire everyone in the USA, close it down and sell off its assets, Romney has relevant business experience.
Ditto if you could offshore the job of being the population of the United States.
Other than those two scenarios, he will be asea. In his yacht, of course, but still asea.
To put it another way: Obama is now rated higher than Lucifer on economic matters. Can’t stop those Democrats!
