This recent Gallup poll very clearly illustrates the basic dynamics of the 2012 Presidential race. President Obama’s strength is that people just don’t like Mitt Romney. They don’t think Romney is likeable, they don’t think he understands people, and they don’t think he is particularly trustworthy. On the question of who is more likeable Obama holds an incredible 23 point lead. From Gallup:

The one thing keeping Romney in the race is that the American people have concluded that Obama has done a terrible job with the economy and as a result almost anyone would probably be better. That is why Romney needs the election to be completely focused on how bad a job Obama did with the economy, unfortunately for Romney his campaign has done a poor job controlling the debate. Instead of a focus on the economy, the past few weeks have been dominated by tax returns, Medicare, and abortion.

Con men have to be likeable.
It appears that the Rom. tax issues will get even more duplicitous if the present coverage is accurate.
“No apparent terror link” in these NYC shootings, according to CNN. Because. y’know, if a white guy does it then it ain’t terriFYING.
Far as I’m concerned, the NRA is a terrorist organization currently creating much more misery in the US than Al Qaeda.
you are soooo
rightcorrect, Matthew! So Obama is the next George W Bush and Romney is the next John Kerry as things stand now. Reading the analysis I got a flashback to the 2004 election with Bush being more likeable and Kerry not responding back sufficiently to attacks.
How about polling of people’s opionions of the sources of each candidate’s campaign money, like “which do you prefer — the candidate that gets huge donations from wealthy individuals and Super PACs, or the one that gets most of their money from Wall Street and major corporations?”
Duh, beats me!
The gap would be even larger on a “Who would you rather have a beer with?” question. Obama brews his own, Romney doesn’t drink.
Behold: rightwing propoganda hot offa the corp-ownd
brainwashingpropoganda wurlitzer.Struth!
Romney is gonna be saying in November, “But, but, I told you people, I paid at least 13% EVERY year. Why did you not believe me?”
I like that too.
“The gunman is white” is exactly what I thought when I read it wasn’t terrorism. Mass shooting sounds like a terrorist act to me but then I just finished reading “Columbine” this morning and striking terror into the souls of their victims but more importantly those watching on television was Harris and Klebold’s goal.
Man, I was having a “deja vu all over again” moment too.
I think Romney’s “likability” deficit can be atributed to the fact that he is an asswipe and his wife acts like Marie Antoinette with PMS.
I’d rather have a beer with dubya than Obama at this point…and I quit drinking alcohol many years ago.
If anybody has been noticing, these mass shootings are bcoming more and more prevalent and have even spread overseas. Let’s be honest, a certain percentage of the people are crazy. A certain percentage of the crazies are dangerous. The more people on the planet, the more the odds eventually catch up with al of us. Used to be just people with brain tumors or people who work at the post office.
One wonders what people find most likeable in the President–the secret deals, the betrayal of his base, the continued attack on human rights, the air of condescension, or the marked speech impediment.

The huge disparity in wealth (or the lack thereof for most people) is behind a lot of this. It’s only going to get worse until that disparity is reduced.
Because that would exclude the major party candidates
Big effin deal!
I blame long-term austerity that has been going on from Reagan to Obama. Decades ago there was a far better mental health system in the US and many of those at risk now would have found themselves institutionalized before they went and had these mass shootings. The Aurora shooting in particular seems like it would have been stopped if we had gone back to having a pre-Reagan era mental health system given how he had actively tried to get help.
Agreed. But, wealth AND arrogance are particularly off-putting.
I wouldn’t. Obama’s smarter. And hey–who would it be more useful to call ont he carpet? The guy who currently holds power. Now, I’ll grant. . . I might be a sputtering and incoherent ball of outrage before I got too far. . .
The mental health system is in crisis. One problem is doctors prescribe meds that DO control some neuroses and psychoses. BUT, the patients quit taking the meds or the doctors take them off when they improve and…..well, you know what happens then. That is exactly what happened in the Andrea Yates case where she killed her 5 kids here in Houston a few years ago.
Best drinking buddy ever…..John McCain.
His wife owns a brewery.
RMoney is such an empty suit that even Barry’s have assed first term will probably be just enough to get him re-elected at this juncture. RMoney obviously thinks the US is just another Corp. he can buy and restructure anyway he wants. To that end his pals in the various GOP dominated States has been busy trying to rig the election before hand like they did in 2000 and 2004. They didn’t bother in 2008 because they knew it was going to be a D yr. by a significant margin no matter who the D’s ran against them. That yr. the real Presidential race was between Barry and Hillary. I wish I’d voted for Hillary in that one. Oh well, shit happens.
“RMoney obviously thinks the US is just another Corp. he can buy and restructure anyway he wants”
That’s been the D/R plan for a very long time
