Three national polls out today all confirm that the Presidential race still remains extremely close. The Fox News poll is the best for Obama, showing him with a four point lead. In the NPR poll, Obama leads Romney by just two points; but the CBS News/New York Time poll finds Romney actually ahead by a single point.
Fox News (7/15-17)
Barack Obama 45%
Mitt Romney 41%
Other 2%
Wouldn’t vote 4%
Don’t Know 7%
NPR (7/9-12)
Barack Obama 47%
Mitt Romney 45%
Undecided 5%
CBS News/New York Times (7/11-16)
Mitt Romney 47%
Barack Obama 46%
Undecided 4%
Won’t Vote 1%
What continues to be the millstone around Obama’s neck is the awful state of the economy. The Fox News poll found 49 percent think the Obama administration has made the economy worse, while only 37 percent think it has made the situation better. Similarly per the CBS/NYT poll, only 39 percent approve of his handling of the economy compared to 55 percent who disapprove.
Obama’s dismal marks on the economy are responsible for giving Romney the edge on that issue. The same CBS/NYT poll found 49 percent believe Romney would do a better job handling the economy compared to just 41 percent who think Obama would do better.

Well I guess my f@cking retarded vote will matter very much this cycle, then. Why is neither candidate pandering to me?
What about the zogby poll, is that a legitimate national poll? The Gary Johnson team’s been emailing me claiming he’s climing fast, and is now up to 5.3%.
On the economic front things can only get worse for Obama. It’s not as though people like Krugman didn’t warn him about this three years ago. The fact that under Romney things would probably be even worse doesn’t matter. If people are out for blood, they will take it where they can find it. Pennsylvania is a case in point.
My wife and I (registered Democrats in Central Texas) both got mailers from John McCain last week, begging us to give Mittens money and promising to match our donation of up to $45.
If there’s EVER a year to register a protest vote – this is it!
You need to be nicer to both of them.
You know how you get some times.
If Romney wins and inevitably makes the economy worse, the second dip will be called the Obama dip. Eight more years of Rs stealing from the masses to give to the rich…
Hahaha. I bet *that* was money well spent on behalf of Mitt’s campaign. You all gave to Mitt, right?
You know I’m voting green party. Here in Texas, a red state, nothing to lose.
I think Kermit would make s good POTUS.
Doesn’t sound like the John McCain I KNOW.
I see it as voting my conscience rather than a protest vote, but yeah. At any rate, the Democratic Party knows exactly what it is doing by alienating progressives. The entire political landscape shifts to the right, which is the ultimate goal of both parties.
“Trickle u] economics”.
“A rising tide lifts all boats”……….. but only if you have a boat.
Let’s not forget that the electoral college is still tilted towards Obama. Romney will likely have to win FL, VA, OH and MICH. Could be a tough row to hoe.
re Fisker… Rmoney says when I say we, I mean taxpayers… taxpayer, Mitt? In 2009?
will Mitt tell us his bundlers? ummm, according to Rhack Tim Miller, no way will I answer
Wow, 5.3% for Gary Johnson is pretty astounding. If accurate, that’s really something. Good for him. Would love to see a poll showing that Jill Stein and the Green Party has those kinds of numbers.
I’m getting ready for some serious weaselly pandering from Obama in the upcoming weeks and months. That he and his camp and surrogates have been on non-stop attack mode for weeks and the polls still show a tie cannot be a good sign for him.
And the fuckers are handing out cement shoes to everyone without a boat. Kind of them.
I actually rubbed my junk on the mailer and sent it back (prepaid postage, how sweet!) empty.
You know John McCain?
Good tactic, might as well cost them a few dimes for the irritation.
I am in despair over the whole mess. Nothing good comes of any of it. I’ll take “Dems suck less” for my final answer, I guess. I am really trying to stress my despair when they call me, just so they know I am not going to be their pushover this time. I don’t know what difference it will make, none most likely.
I’m confident that a Mitt Romney will win the election, just the only question is which complexion Mitt will win.
If Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are the choices for president of the world’s most powerful country, then I want to see Kim Kardashian with arm loads of Emmy Awards and Oscars. That way the world will seem less capricious and more predictable. Throw in a Nobel Peace Prize for the reigning Queen of “Reality” while we’re at it. At least she’s easy on the eyes and doesn’t want to kill anyone with drone strikes.
Obama has a terrible record far too long to enumerate here. He may be a strong campaigner but he was/is a weak leader, fearful of his corporate masters and pretending the Republicans where a “loyal” opposition party may well cost him a second term. The people were hoping for a strong leader not some bipartisan fantasy.
You’re my hero.
NOt that I am in your class, but I pickup the mail for the company. My bosses get a letter from Mitt about every week. I spit on it and throw it in the trash.
Coke or Pepsi
I agree. The presidential election is mostly entertainment. The outcome only academic.
The really intersting thing is which party will win the house. The one that doesn’t pass any legislation or the one that only passes bad legislation.
Hang on there. Ther IS a difference between Coke and Pepsi.
Now, RC Cola, that’s different.
My brother-in-law knows a guy who knows the guy that is the pool guy at one of his houses.
Wait for the debates, he’ll cream Romney.
Did you see that Romney trpotted out his wife and she said (regarding tax returns) “We’ve given you people all that you’re entitled to.”
“You people”, really….
How about Dr. Pepper or Mr. Pibb?
If you’re not one of them your nothing but a serf.
Perhaps if Obama busts more medicinal cannabis dispensaries in California, he might manage to lose our 55 electoral votes as well? It is not like Obama has blanched at throwing away that kind of political capital and more.
This is what happens when constituencies throw their lot with a candidate early and often and without condition, the candidate bashes the unconditionally supportive base to prove to their opponents, whose votes the candidate will never get anyway, that the candidate is indeed centrist and principled. Ditto on labor.
Unconditional political support on the left is always followed by a kick in the groin. On the right, they reward their base.
When the Republicans are in power, they attack the Democrats. When the Democrats are in power, they attack the Democrat base.
Hey Jon, I have a request. Can you give us some updates on the Rocky Anderson campaign? I don’t really care about Obama or Romney so it would be nice to get an alternative perspective of the presidential race more often. Thanks.

What? Are you saying that the Cherry-Pick Mitt Romney Movement hasn’t established a thirty-point lead for Barack Obama?
Because you are not interested in the choice between a shit sandwich with one sccop or 2.
You are actually looking at the 3rd party option. No shit eating necessary there.
If only he were on the ballot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is not entirely true.
If the Democratic Party represented my interests, I would vote for Obama.
It doesn’t matter to me one bit what party affiliation goes along with the person who represents my interests as long as my interests are actually represented.
So would I. Now that you mention it, I’d love to see objective coverage of this election ANYWHERE BY ANYONE. FDL has turned into just another party shill.
Gary Johnson’s campaign argues loudly of media & the two parties colluding to insure this year our chouice is tweedle-dee or tweedle-dum. They may get their way, there’s a lot of strong tribal influence these days, but I will NOT vote for either of them.
A big boat.
“What continues to be the millstone around Obama’s neck is the awful state of the economy.”
Maybe for some people. For me, the millstone is killing innocents by drone in undeclared wars. Or maybe it’s the attendant arrogation of power. Or wait, maybe it’s the corporate-tool thing, or the prosecution of whistle-blowers, or the failure to act on global warming…
He’s a strong leader for the ruling and wealthy class. That’s pretty much all we’re going to get from either party for the forseeable future thanks to hopey changey.
But, but, but Romney has COOTIES!
