Just like in 2008, young people overwhelmingly prefer Obama over a Republican President, but the difference is this year young people are not overly enthusiastic about voting. From Gallup:

Obama holds a incredible 35 point advantage over Romney with voters under the age of 30, but his problem is that only 56% of registered voters under 30 are definitely planning on voting this November. Among every other age group over 80% say they will definitely vote this year. Whether or not these young people that technically prefer Obama but aren’t excited about voting for him actually show up could decide the election. The big drop in youth turnout from 2008 to 2010 is one of the factors that led to Democrats losing a historic number of seats in Congress.
This is why we are seeing Obama really focus on the student loan issue and holding so many events on college campuses. Given that young adults have economically done disproportionally worse than other age groups during Obama’s first term, his campaign has a very difficult task in front of them on this front.

The younger set hasn’t seen anything of O since he’s been prez, since all he’s done is hang out in the OO playing with his joystick.
Any valid poll asking about Obama vs Romney must also ask Are you a smoker or a nonsmoker.
(And led is spelled ‘led’, not ‘lead’.)
How do you think Obama would do among smokers?
Odd, isn’t it, how if you ignore the real concerns of a constituency for several years, they’re just not fired up to turn out at the voting booth.
I wouldn’t believe those 80%+ figures at this point. The 2008 voter turnout was the highest since 1960 at 63%. Plus I haven’t kicked in my “Don’t Vote For Anybody — It Only Encourages Them” campaign yet.
I wonder what kind of negative ads Romney’s masters will direct toward young voters.
The second column is a % of the first column; .77*.77=.59. And people always lie about voting bc they think they should, so .59 gets reduced by whatever the “lie factor” is; this year it should be pretty high.
I was at a memorial lunch today and, except for the deceased’s son & daughter (middle-aged), I might have been the youngest at 67. When I said I wasn’t going to vote for prez this year, there was great shock expressed.
Terrific idea for a campaign, btw.
I think they’ll hammer the unemployment rate among recent college grads — as a sign of weak stewardship of the economy.
D’oh. Of course.
I see a lot of support for Obama, but most of it is tepid. Data here. Obama’s main political asset is that the alternative to him is so horrific. He’s aware of it.
You can vote here.
This is what happens when a large portion of your base are slackers.
It doesn’t matter what I think.
As versus slack-jawed.
It’s hard to be enthusiastic about a candidate that has tried like hell to be just like his opponent.
Real men don’t (won’t) read instructions. When you get to be my age you’ll understand.:-)
Anyhow the 63% (at wiki) referred to “eligible voters” which indicates to me that they were registered but perhaps not.
eligible: qualified to participate
Yeah how many people are going to take the day off from work, stand inline for eight hours to vote for some prick who is going to raise Medicare to 67 and Social Security to 70
Hope & Change has curdled into Chump Change
The apathy about Obama this time around is a HUGE difference from 2008. Whether or not it will deny him another term remains to be seen, but if it does, he will have no one to blame but himself.
No president in our history has so determinedly squandered such an historic opportunity to make real change in america.
This hippie lettuce smoker will be voting for either Mickey Mouse or Rocky Anderson for Prez.
Of the hundreds of Broken Promises Obama has festered upon the land, his jackbooted takedown of state licensed compassion clubs is straight out of 30′s Germany. Totally unnecessary and cruel
Any cannabis connoisseur who votes for Obama is as self deluded as a Wisconsin Union member or teacher voting for Scott Walker in the Recall
You mean like investment bankers who have never done an honest day’s work in their lives?
Obama has shown that he will sacrifice a second term to preserve the Neoliberal agenda
Some of the college graduates who are considering attending graduate school also might not be as enthusiastic about President Obama:
Obama to Graduate Students: Pay Up

Alpha Male societies (not all are Alpha Male Led).

Agree, but it’s more than apathy toward Obama in many cases, probably. People can understand it when somebody tries and fails, but an outright and obvious lack of character breeds resentment and antagonism.
The Black Agenda Report nailed it on May 7, 2008
You are so full of shit that I can spot your posts within the first few words. What a waste of my brain power. Get a friggin’ life.
PS: I’m outta flags; help me out here, folks.
Interesting: the edit won’t allow my comment on ‘help me flag this empty-head’…….perhaps it will come up later.
And it did! I’m fascinated by the process.
Barack Obama is to African-Americans as Marco Rubio is to Hispanics.
The young people I know are pissed and it takes little effort on my part to convince them to vote progressive third party. Indeed, they are totally receptive to the idea that the Democratic party has enabled the GOP and should be taken out. I start talking about the Whigs and they understand well how a dramatic change is the only possible way out of our bi-partisan nightmare.
Thanks for the link. I came back to the thread late, so I’ll read it tomorrow. I’ve been on the lookout for a good book on alpha male societies but haven’t found one yet. It’s only one of my many interests, so the book search is not top priority.
Rubio spent part of his life as a Mormon, apparently.
This is exactly the sort of weak-ass, simplistic, over-generalized, vapid bullshit I was talking about, Shooter. Of all the different angles Walker’s post afforded you toward taking a stab at your opponents, you went with this?! Ye gods, man! Have some pride. Where’s your work ethic?
Yeah, isn’t that funny.
But then when it was pretty obvious that Democratic voters stayed home in 2010, all we ended up hearing was Obama was too much to the left.
Ha, what a hoot, I’d vote for the guy if he did everything he said he would do in 2008 (when apparently, he was still a member of the Democratic party), but he hasn’t, he wont, and I’m not voting for him.
I guess SocNet web campaigns are so “4 years ago”.
Or maybe the “yout’s” are pissed that “the rent’s too damn high! And the wage is too damn low, if you can get a wage.”
Even the young and idealistic need to eat.
The pattern is clear: if Obama thinks he can count on your vote, you’re screwed.
… and succeeded.
President Hockacrat demonstrates that success every single day.
