Mitt Romney is extremely rich. In itself that is not necessarily a political problem. Americans vote for rich politicians all the time and rarely begrudge “honest” success stories. What is a problem for Romney is that it is starting to seem as if he has been so incredibly rich for so long he can’t appreciate that other people are not rich.
Today in Michigan Romney tried to connect with regular people but just ended up pointing out that he is so rich his household has a large fleet of expensive cars. From the Washington Post:
“This feels good, being back in Michigan,” Romney said. “You know, the trees are the right height. The streets are just right. I like the fact that most of the cars I see are Detroit-made automobiles. I drive a Mustang and a Chevy pick-up truck. Ann drives a couple of Cadillacs, actually. And I used to have a Dodge truck. So I used to have all three covered.”
This is another in a series of statements from Romney showing he doesn’t understand what a lot of money is to most people.
At one point Romney said the roughly $360,000 he collected in speaker fees was “not very much” money. In addition, there was the time Romney tried to bet Rick Perry $10,000. Romney’s campaign tried to spin that as him making an outrageous bet, but in reality a $10,000 bet for Romney is like a regular America making a ten to twenty dollar wager. Also, let’s not forget when Romney said “I’m not concerned about very poor people.”
Simply being rich shouldn’t inherently be a political problem for Romney, but the growing impression that his huge fortune has made him unable to even comprehend what life is like for regular people could become a serious image issue.

So, no hybrids Mitt?
Romney’s campaign clarified what Willard was saying somewhat but all they accomplished is showing once again how clueless they all are:
Imagine that! Two homes = two cars. Duh! WTF did you expect her to do? Drive her own car across the country or something? Sheesh!
i don’t think i’ve ever cared for a minute that any of these people are rich. i care that they are sadists, greed heads, sociopaths and yes, even killers, though they do their killing by proxy.
Sorry, Dave, I fixed that for you.
Honestly. The locutions, not just the concepts. One person “drives a couple of Cadillacs.” A couple – a casual phrase, one that implies one is not entirely sure of the number referred to..is it two? Three maybe? Mmmm, not sure, but hey! It’s not important.
It’s that little stuff that rings loud in the ears of hearers that ought to just flat out disqualify him to anyone who works for a salary.
Is she not permitted a car in New Hampshire, at the Lake Winnepesawki house? Or must she drive up there from Massachusetts?
And — of course — does that Cadillac have a dog carrier on top?
Jon, not Dave.
Ding! Ding! Ding!
Amazing, isn’t it? A pity for poor old Seamus that they didn’t have a car-in-waiting in Canada all those years ago.
Or maybe they just couldn’t afford it yet./s
Ooops, my bad! Mea culpa! In my defense, I’ll just say….oh, never mind. I’m sorry, Jon.
I can’t wait for Mitt to make his “elitist” message in his campaign against Obama. Maybe he’ll borrow Scott Brown’s (fake) pickup truck. Or that little red truck Fred Thompson supposedly uses.
The discussion at this week’s debate about Dr Paul calling Rick a “fake” was pretty instructive. No one wanted that conversation to continue.
No problemo, I only wanted to note the correction before the thread’s conversation went awry, as I’ve noticed it does sometimes when the post is attributed incorrectly in the comments….
Personally, I’d like a complete inventory of his cars because I think we are already undercounting his homes by 50%.
Perhaps at that time all they could afford was another dog at their destination…
Things get so far off the rails so often these days! I’m surprised that we’re at number 13 in the comments and we haven’t yet had the obligatory “How-dare-you-criticize-a-Republican-when-Democrats-are-just-as-bad/worse-as/than-they-are?”
You are on fire, Peg. And we are on the same page.
I love, btw, how many people are not letting the story of Seamus go. David Letterman, Stephen Colbert both hit it regularly, plus frequent hits elsewhere. I think SNL (the weekend update maybe?) hit it in passing last weekend, too.
I think it’s important, and I think part of its importance is that interview with (Chris Wallace, was it?) where Wallace said he couldn’t imagine doing that to his family dog, and Mitt gave his phony little chuckle and defended his cruelty! Idiot claimed the dog “loved it!”
Anyone who’s ever owned a dog knows better. It’s just one part of a heartless soulless man.
He will never mention a dog, that is for sure. Letterman apparently just discovered the Story of Seamus, and he has been driving that dog all over his show the last couple of nights.
Joe Scarborough was on last night, called Obama a conservative. I thought that was interesting, but I have never seen or heard that guy before.
I don’t think there’s any proof that he is a sadist. Otherwises, you’re spot on IMO.
You may have omitted narcissist. But, I suppose, ALL political figures are that.
One thing is for certain. The video of today’s speech in Detroit won’t be titled “Triumph of the Willard.”
Well put.
I would imagine that someone as wealthy as Willard probably owns numerous modes of transportation: planes, yachts, etc.
THOSE people, like John McCain 4 years ago, DON’T count AS RESIDENCES, vacations cabins, chalets in Aspen, apartments in Manhattan, villas on Martha’s Vinyard, or condos on Hilton Head Island or Key Biscay.
Pretty sure that’s custom-built into all of Willard’s vehicles.
Maybe “Triumph of Empty Space”…
And Pierce notes that there are Plenty of Good Seats Still Available
I’m a stern RomneyNOT voter and have been so as long as I can remember.
Yet the trappings of wealth would disqualify a lot of pols if it disqualifies any single one. That would include many in both of the woefully compromised parties.
Romney has enough conflicted positions for anyone to toss him out anyway. His campaign is simply about his own ambition, yet again, not about the country or policy. Otherwise he would not have flipped and flopped so often or shown up as Mass Governor for no convincing reason.
On a scale of commitmnet to consistency, Romney is way below the poverty line, no?
“The discussion at this week’s debate about Dr Paul calling Rick a “fake” was pretty instructive.”

I saw that. Thought it was very “ballsy” of old Ron. Notice that Santorum didn’t disagree and Romney all but nodded approval. THAT was what was most interesting.
Given all the “American-built” cars this guy has, why can’t one of them be a self-igniting Pinto?
It’s been a long time since I was a student at a campaign school, but I clearly remember that one of the most fundamental rules was “never book a venue you can’t fill.”
Probabaly one plane and two yachts.
Taibbi posted a pretty thoughtful piece yesterday on the current state of the GOP…
You guys are brutal sometimes. :-)
Carry on.
LMAO! Maybe he should stick with local “Hooters” then… Do they still have Hooters?
Some kind of prize is in order for that comment. Bwahahaha.
I heard a great phrase, somewhere that, “He has a flexibility of conviction.”
See my #30.
Here in Texas, one on every other street corner.
Variety helps when it comes time for the getaway. *g*
I agree, and it should be a show stopper for any WH wannabe.
Hey, if George Will of all people can call Obama elitist and not be drowned out by laughter, maybe the Mittster can get away with it, too.
Yeah, they do. Last summer, Mrs. Tiger and I took a 2,500-mile spin around the midsection of the country to visit some presidential libraries. We discovered that the density of Hooters (and Lion’s Den roadside porn shops) was directly proportional to the percent of the vote McCain got in 2008.
Hey, I’m just here to help. ;-)
Most Americans don’t own two houses, no less two Cadillacs, plus two other automobiles.
But since the Romneys actually own 4 — or is it 5? — homes far away from each, maybe Romney was playing down the actual number of vehicles they own, paring down just to four.
Thought he’d get away with that smallish number.
For the record, and post #38 reminded me, George Will said that on “This Week”.
Far be it for me to argue with George.
heh…
I’m in Texas and from Houstopolis. Don’t pay attention to any possible Hooters though.
But many Americans have only one house and two mortgages.
There’e a piece of information Time and Newsweek might be interested in. You got any “B” roll to go along with the study?
Elite is only a pejorative when applied to liberals or perceived liberals. The rich elite deserve worship.
Does anyone know for sure what happened to Seamus? I’ve heard that the dog ran away (I wonder why?) and other stories that no one knows and Mitt ain’t talkin’ and others that he’s still happily wagging his tail in one of Mitt’s summer homes.
Wanna hear something really scary? Even Pat Buchanan thinks the repugs have gone off the rails.
Understand, I’m not a regular diner. But, they have car shows on weekends.
I was vaguely inspired by Nate Silver’s Starbucks to Wal-Mart ratio, one of my favorite political statistics.
As many people have pointed out, it’s not the wealth per se. It’s the obvious disconnect he has about what it means to not be wealthy.
Prolly went to live on a GMO soybean farm where he can chase mutant squirrels or something…
Scantily clad no doubt… ;)
I read that the other day. That may be a “pot-kettle” kinda issue though.
OTOH, when Gary Busey says you’re a fuckin’ idiot, you need to scale back the rhetoric.
We’ve got a greeat and infinitely amusing country here. I just hoep we can save it from the oligarchs.
No. I usually wear shorts and golf shirt.
Touche’
Very well put. Betcha he thinks when he sees a bus full of black people, that it’s a charter going to basketball game.
Thanks for the setup.
Don;t recall seeing you here recently….
Here’s his wiki.
But take your choice if you just google him.
I pictured you as a daisy dukes with a bikini on top type…
Much too late for that.
Only on Halloween
eCAHN, did you see this youtube from the House of Lords about all kinds of crazy stuff going on in the intl banking system. It’s about 10 minutes, but it seems scandalous. I don’t *really* understand what it means, though. What do you think?
OT
Anyone want to subscribe to Carbonite so I can get 3 months free? It’s gone up to around $60/year, but is a completely hands off backup system for everything on your computer. I subscribed before I bought my new computer a little less than a year ago, transferred everything onto Carbonite from the old one, and then from Carbonite onto the new one. Worked like a charm, though to do a complete transfer, as I did, took a couple of days in each direction. But you never have to worry about losing anything anymore.
Yes, I looked at it when you linked in an earlier thread. I haven’t a clue and that lord’s presentation was incomprehensible. I have no idea if he were off his meds, or, if genuine, what might be going on. But keep your antennae up for more info.
You might try posting the link on nakedcapitalism and asking who knows anything about it.
On edit: I had not previously seen any shots from House of Lords. Gratified to learn that they have red benches, whereas House of Commons have green benches. Never know when such info will come in handy.
Thanks eCAHN. It sounds juicy. I hope we hear more about it some time.
I demand your envy!
There’s also a story going around about some trillions of old (?; details fail me) USG bonds. Bogus or real?? Big sums.
I’m not an expert, but my first impression (term of art in law) is that these kinds of made-up (or is it Madoff) stories bc common in times of economic & financial collapse. Some of which turn out to be true, some fabricated. And you don’t discover which is which until after you die (speaking for myself, only, of course, meaning I don’t have 50 years left).
Lemme check with some of my friends in Nigeria………
ON the current OT topic…..
Taked to some guy at the UPS store….he says he bought Iraqi Dinars at 10 cents on dinar AS DID the US government. HE SAYS that when the Iraqi money “recovers” he’ll make $250,000 off his $30,000 investment. US Govenment MAY make several BILLION$$$.
I don’t know if guys who own UPS stores are “reliable sources”?????
Don’t bother. They would be no more reliable than anyone else on such subjects. My fave source is Chalabi. My second fave is Khadhir Hamza. My third fave is Judith Miller (or is it the daughter some ME VIP who testified that SH was pulling plugs from premmies in Kuwait). So hard to keep priorities.
Giving you benefit of doubt that you have friends in Nigeria.
Well, if you take advice from some guy at UPS store, you deserve all the returns you get.
A couple of weekends in a row last month, at my favorite breakfast eatery in Long Beach, CA, some guy (customer) has been puffing this same Iraqi dinar scam to anyone who’ll stand still long enough. It didn’t sound realistic then, and it doesn’t sound any better coming from the UPS guy. Leave your wallet at home! (:>
Breakfast for dinars. Bon appetit!
In responce to all, I don’t particularly care what they where or what they are, I just care about what they will do for the country and its citizens. We need a levelling playing field, not just reward the rich and throw the less fortunate under the buss. It looks like all we have is two class and two standards.
I wouldn’t lie to you. I met him on a flight from London to Houston. He was connecting from Lagos.
I just figured…if ANYONE knew their way around internmational monetary scams it would be somebody from Nigeria. :-)
I h eard you can print Iraqi currency that will pass for genuine from aninternet .pdf with a good HP laser printer. Soak it in a mixture of 95% distilled water and 5% Folgers Crystals. Run them through your dryer with some old pistaccio shells and you’re good to go.
I wouldn’t lie to you. I met him on a flight from London to Houston. He was connecting from Lagos.
Flight 419, of course.
I’m surprised the Mrs. drives. With that kind of money I would have a chauffeur. Then at least RawMoney, Daddy BigBucks. could say he is a job creator. I bet his “help” can’t even speak English.
Personally, I think Romney would get more bang for his buck by just giving the Republican base a hundred bucks each and tell them to vote for Romney, spelled R O M N E Y.
On second thought, maybe he’d better write it down for them and pin it to their jacket on election night along with a nice crisp Franklin.
