Rick Santorum currently holds a solid lead in the upcoming Michigan primary according to four recent polls of the state. In the polls, the Santorum lead over Mitt Romney ranges from 3-10 points.
From the Detroit News poll:
Santorum leads Romney 34 percent to 30.4 percent among likely Republican primary voters, but the gap is within the margin of error of 4.4 percentage points. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich had support from 11.6 percent of respondents, former U.S. Rep. Ron Paul had 8.9 percent and 12.4 percent was undecided.
From the Mitchell/Rosetta Stone poll:
Rick Santorum has jumped into the lead in a Mitchell/Rosetta Stone Poll of Michigan conducted for MIRS (Michigan Information & Research Service). Santorum (34%) has a 9% lead over Mitt Romney (25%) while Ron Paul (11%) and Newt Gingrich (5%) are far behind in a trial Republican presidential ballot test. A quarter of the voters remain undecided (25%). Just twelve days ago, before Santorums victories in Minnesota, Missouri, and Colorado on February 7th, Romney (31%) held a 15% lead over Newt Gingrich (16%) with Santorum (15%) and Paul (15%) right behind. Four percent said they were voting for someone else and 19% were undecided in the earlier survey.
From Rasmussen Reports:
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Republican Primary Voters in Michigan shows Santorum with 35% of the vote to Romney’s 32%. Well behind are Texas Congressman Ron Paul with 13% and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich with 11%. Only one percent (1%) prefers some other candidate in the race, while eight percent (8%) are undecided.
From Inside Michigan Politics/MRG poll:
In the presidential primary ballot test, Santorum received 43 percent to Romney’s 33 percent, followed by Newt Gingrich at 11 percent, and Ron Paul at 8 percent.
A loss in the Michigan primary for Romney would be a real setback for his campaign and a significant embarrassment given that it is one of Romney’s home states. Santorum is still riding high off his triple win earlier this month. The primaries in Michigan and Arizona on February 28th are probably Romney’s best chance to stop Santorum’s momentum before Super Tuesday. If Santorum does win Michigan and can carry that momentum into a decent showing on Super Tuesday, the nomination fight would probably continue for months.

If this is right, and proves out in the primary, it’ll mean that the chances of a wide-open gooper convention go up, big time. The “moderate” republicans know damn well that no one who thinks that women pregnant from rape or incest should carry to term, has a chance of winning the White House. And that’s just one piece of Santorum’s baggage. The party leaders will put everything they’ve got behind Romney. If they don’t, they run the risk of Santorum’s shitty coattails undoing the giant gains they made in 2008, and that, they really don’t want.
On the other hand, if they can hang onto the house, and maybe pick up the Senate, even while failing to get the White House, it would be fatcat nirvana: they’ve still got a neutered Obama sitting in the Oval Office, to hate on while he does their work for them.
Hell, that’s all it would take to get my vote. He and Obama are so similar that the best sense of humor could be the winning factor.

Indeed. But in a wide open convention, Sarah is a real danger. She’s got a lot of support from the batshit wing and the trailer park wing. The country club wing is not at all enthusiastic about Mitt and it’s an open question if they could outvote the Palinistas.

The more the republican candidates look like a bunch of crazed shithouse rats, the more it means that Obama can stay on the right side of most of the issues we’re facing.

The presidential election can easily be rigged by controlling the vote in the so-called “swing states.” And we all know by now that despite the contrary wishes of hundreds of millions of Americans, the banksters actually control our government. If they want Preznit Romney, they can easily arrange it, regardless of the popular vote.

My husband is watching Andrea Mitchell interview the Red White & Blue Fund guy (Santorum’s pac) and he was so shocked by what the guy said (circa 1952) that he had to call and tell me at work. This fellow said that we in the US are too preoccupied with sex and that birth control should be a woman holding an aspirin between her legs. What decade do these people live in???

Anyone can now vote in MI primary I understand. My husband wants to go vote for Santorum just to have an easier target than Romney in the general election. (Of course, I will not vote for a Repub or a Dem.)

The western side of Michigan is extremely right wing so I would think Santorum would have a real chance here.
Haven’t seen a poll since mid-January. They have had to reschedule our primary due to republican gerrymandering and the Texas primary, originally scheduld for March 6, was moved to April 3, and now it is May 29.

I agree that it’s disgusting to take away workers’ benefits under any circumstances. And no doubt, the 1%ers now running the “new GM” are getting a huge paycheck with other perks & lurks.
But I still see conservatives whining about Obama’s “socialistic” take over of the auto industry… why? Certainly not because of the egregious pay & benefits of those at the top. No, it’s bc middle & working class *evil unionists* got to keep their jobs.

Who are the shareholders of the New GM? I’ll bet retirement funds were holding a great deal of the Old GM when it went under and the New GM is held mostly by private investors like <1%er's.

Michigan doesn’t have registration by party. On primary election day, one can vote in either party’s primary, no questions asked. However, the names of those who vote on February 28, and the party primary in which they voted, will be part of the public record for the next two years.
Michigan has an open primary so any “Democrat” that wants to reek a little mischief can hold their nose and vote for Sanitorium. Mitt thinks he owns the state and needs a wake up call.
It’s called framing the issue. The republicans keep moving to the right, and the democrats are all too happy to meet them halfway, or all the way. The self-proclaimed progressives in the meantime, are always eager to buy all the lame platitudes uttered to the base as excuses for why the democrats have become increasingly conservative. The rank and file progressives then end up parroting all those said lame platitudes in an attempt to suppress liberals who don’t want to go along with President Obama’s and the democrats’ conservative agendas.
Well, Rahm Emmanuel was at least honest, when he framed pissed-off progressives as “a bunch of fucking retards.”
