Rick Santorum’s surprise triple win last week in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri has proven to be an amazing shot in the arm to his campaign. His polling numbers have skyrocketed both nationally and in the upcoming primary states.
In Gallup’s daily tracking poll Santorum’s support jumped from 16 percent before those three events to 27 percent yesterday. Similarly Santorum is surging in Michigan, where according to PPP he now holds a 15 point lead over Mitt Romney. From PPP:
Rick Santorum’s taken a large lead in Michigan’s upcoming Republican primary. He’s at 39% to 24% for Mitt Romney, 12% for Ron Paul, and 11% for Newt Gingrich.
Santorum’s rise is attributable to two major factors: his own personal popularity (a stellar 67/23 favorability) and GOP voters increasingly souring on Gingrich. Santorum’s becoming something closer and closer to a consensus conservative candidate as Gingrich bleeds support.
Santorum’s winning an outright majority of the Tea Party vote with 53% to 22% for Romney and 10% for Gingrich. He comes close to one with Evangelicals as well at 48% to 20% for Romney and 12% for Gingrich. And he cracks the 50% line with voters identifying as ‘very conservative’ at 51% to 20% for Romney and 10% for Gingrich.
In 2008 Mitt Romney won Michigan with 39 percent, beating John McCain’s 30 percent. A Romney loss in Michigan at the end of the month would prove very embarrassing to the Romney campaign and cause him to struggle to regain momentum before Super Tuesday.
Of course two weeks is an eternity in this crazy GOP primary, which has been characterized by rapid erratic swings. Plenty could change before the 28th. This is a solid start for Santorum in Michigan, but what is important is how well his lead holds up once the much better funded Romney campaign and associated SuperPACs start flooding the state with campaign ads.

The Obama administration has to be licking their chops.
If I was them, I’d already have the clip of Santorum and Hoekstra announcing that they had found WMDs in Iraq ready to air.
As a resident of the metro-Detroit area, I can attest that the froth has reached tsunami proportions!
No kidding. The GOP party appears to be determined to shoot themselves in the foot. Couple stuff like that with the fact that Santorum couldn’t even hold his own state as Senator because of ethics issues(like state money he took to homeschool his kids while in DC)and the Obama admin must be giggling like schoolgirls over the GOP choices.
Must be all those man on dog sightings here in Michigan!
If you look closely you’ll realize they’re chemtrails.
I live in PA and there was a few really good reasons why Rick Santorum was defeated by 18 points in his 2006 reelection bid for US Senator.
1. Rick was the King of K Street. He met with lobbyists, including Jack Abramhoff, weekly. The purpose of this meeting was to figure out how to funnel funds to the Republicans and establish a permanent Republican majority. Ricky has somehow developed amnesia and claims these meeting actually never occurred and if they did they certainly were all very innocent.
2. While Ricky was in VA duing his day job, his kids were being “home schooled” at his VA residence. After all, those heathen public schools were teaching evolution and that infernal junk climate change science. Hell his kids might even come in contact with blacks and gays. What is the world coming to? Ricky enrolled his kids in cyber school which the school district in PA, where he claims has a home he doesn’t live in, paid $70,000/year to educated his kids. The newspaper in PA found out and blasted Ricky, demanding he refund the money to the school district. He never did.
3. A lot of shannigans going on with a PAC Ricky formed to support the election of other Republicans. Charges about his using the funds primarily for his own campaign and little if any went to the purpose it was intended. A lot of smoke here and if someone really starts to dig, who know what rock will be turned over and expose how sleazy this guy really is.
I know all the man on dog homophobic stuff is being talked about, but I suspect it won’t take much digging to expose this clown for the low life sleaze he really is. Little has been said about his post Senate lobbying career, but I suspect it can’t be good.
….beware of any brownouts
Lest we forget his diehard communist family.
Makes me cringe. My relatives are all evangellin’ — I can just see them dancing with glee to the prospect of having a preacher for a pres.
