Given that Perry is currently polling at only about 4 percent in South Carolina it is hard to imagine his endorsement of Gingrich is really going to sway many votes. Probably the best part of the endorsement for Gingrich is that it does at least guarantee Gingrich some favorable press coverage just days before the South Carolina primary (this Saturday) and helps to promote the image that Gingrich is the anti-Romney.
The fall of Perry should probably be remembered as one of the most disastrous political campaigns ever. When Perry first entered the race he had a huge national lead, a great resume and impressive fund raising. The GOP was hungry for an alternative to Mitt Romney and Perry -on paper- fit the bill perfectly. All Perry had to do was look semi-competent on the debate stage and he likely could have won the nomination. Apparently though, ‘sound competent’ was just too hard for Perry and his numbers collapsed to almost nothing.
While we will probably never really know for sure, I wouldn’t be surprised if Perry’s decision to get out at this very moment doesn’t have a fair amount to do with Stephen Colbert’s push to get people to vote for Herman Cain as a sign of support for Colbert. Given how badly Perry was polling in South Carolina many people were speculating that Cain (Colbert) could have beaten Perry this Saturday. That might have been just too embarrassing of an end to an already pathetic campaign.
Update: David Dayen has more.

But he has such nice hair and he isn’t fat.
Polls are tightening. Gingrich could win this thing.
Romney did not win Iowa (Santorum up 38 votes with eight precincts that cannot be certified).
It comes down to Santorum voters. They can vote for a viable (in SC) not-Romney, or stick with their guy.
Damn. I guess I shouldn’t have bought as much popcorn as I did. This thing is getting boring fast.
Another Not-Mitt bites the dust. And he’s going to endorse newt. There goes his VP slot, but he might still get a cabinet post out of it.
Boxturtle (Perry in DHS scares me more than Perry in the WH)
Save that popcorn. ABC is going to air an interview with Gingrich’s second wife. Well, if they don’t cancel at the last moment, anyhow.
He entered the race thinking it was just a beauty contest, then discovered there is a talent portion as well. :-)
Boxturtle (Remembers several Miss America’s attempting to sing)
You forgot the bathing suit part. It’s how Scott Brown won Ted Kennedy’s former senate seat. Well, without the bathing suit to be technical.
Governor good hair showed the whole country what a piece of shit he is and ended his electoral winning streak with a humiliating defeat. Maybe now Texas will be able to get rid of him.
They’re under real pressure to cancel it. It must be pretty bad, given that Newt has his daughters fighting it for him.
Boxturtle (I’m thinking Newt isn’t polling strongly enough for ABC to care if they hurt his feelings)
I’ll be (pleasantly) surprised if it isn’t canceled.
Geez. Pass the brain bleach.
Boxturtle (what has once been seen cannot be unseen)
That might tv worth watching!!
I “enjoy” this alleged quote from Newters’ daughters:
What can I say? Having been cheated on, myself, by someone I really cared about: That’s what they ALL say.
I say: talk is really, really, really, really, really CHEAP (and meaningless)!!!! ptoui!
I usually avoid this kind of stuff. But, if it airs, I’ll make an exception for Gingrich’s sake.
You got something against us fat bald guys?
I was at the dentists a couple of weeks ago, and there was a Time magazine with Perry on the cover, just like they did for Bush in Jan 2000, when the PTB were ginning him up. Could become a collectible. Looks like they were intending to do the same for Perry. I read somewhere that the Bush ‘family’ put the kebosh on him for stuff going back a long way.
Don’t know as one has ever been POTUS. Taft comes closest.
From ABC interview, Newt’s second wife claims he wanted an open marriage.
According to JoeMyGod, Newtie asked Marianne for an “open marriage” (i.e. after-the-fact permission to boink Callista while staying married).
The real shocker for me has always been that ANYBODY would let that pasty toad touch her!
You owe me a drink.
Bawhaha!
he sure got his open marriage, didn’t he? That King David forgivness path that was ginned up to allow “family” conservatives to support Newt is starting to look a little rocky.
Boxturtle (Waiting for chorus of “LEEAAVVEE NEWTIE ALLLLOOONNNEEEE”)
he might not be fat but that ain’t his hair
Geez, I can’t believe all the hostility I’m seeing here. Folks, we all owe Perry a huge debt. He lowered the historical bar for the level of intelligence one must be able to display to be a credible major party candidate. How very democratic is that?
I kind of think he is still a rocket scientist compared to bush
How bout a Bullshot? Seems appropriate lol.
Will they touch this with a ten foot pole ?
Perry for the 1%ers, i.e. those at the bottom of the intelligence scale.
Hmmm. Never had one. Seems like a good idea for cocktail hour.
I would make that judgment the other way. I think Bush is grateful to Perry lol. How many angels can dance on a pinhead?
With Bush as a baseline, most people compare favorably to Stephen Hawking.
So he was chasing an open marriage while impeaching Clinton for basically having an open marriage.
Boxturtle (Hillary is not stupid enough to EVER think that Bill was faithful)
It’s been said before, so I’ll say it again: Newticles is an adolescent who never grew up. The serial marriages is just another symptom. In a different life he might have made a good Wall Street Trader. He’s got the personality for it.
Is the definition of a good republican a quitter when the going gets tough ?
Nuke, sarah, nixon and now Perry.
Totally OT, but we’re a happy group this morning: I’m sending this post in from the Tverskaya ulitsa in downtown Moscow, watching Fred Astair dance on the ceiling in our apartment.. Ecahn, you can’t believe the fur coats in this city. The cuts are beyond belief and everyone, but everyone is wearing, so they can’t be an arm and a leg (probably just an arm). When you see teen-age girls wearing mink hoodies, you know they have to be in our pay grade.
Having dinner tomorrow night wth the Minister for Ethnic affairs. Will report.
Naw. Seems to be oriented to Newt’s sex proclivities.
Would a couple of $ 100,000 pieces of jewelry make it happen ?
You need furs in Moscow in the winter.
Newters “asked” for an “open marriage” to bonk Callista?
Yeah: typical Doug Coe “Family” values “christiany” type. It’s “ok” for Newters to bonk whomever he pleases, whenever he pleases. After all Newters “feels badly” if he “caused pain” to anyone. So, eh? It’s all good, and we can all just leave Newters alone… except to vote for his pasty fat ass.
Bah!
Whomever said we bought our popcorn in vain is incorrect. This is getting even more “interesting.”
We have the spectacle of Willard Mittens now LOSING in IA, and we are potentially going to have the “media” actually kinda-sorta do it’s intended job and pull back the curtain on what a lying, crepuscular sleaze bag whoring dick Newters is.
I say: Pass the Popcorn!!
Charming. But too many words for public consumption. /s
Yes. Plus I think they have a ton of mink farms over there. With the westernized countries beginning to eschew fur, it makes sense that mink is probably not *that* expensive in Moscow.
Amen to that, brother. We are getting close to the point where the media will have to stop pretending Paul and his “Good” issues are not figments of our imagination. Get your extra-large popcorn bucket ready if that happens.
I used to know a tiny little bit about raising minks. IIRC, it is difficult, for reasons I can no longer remember.
Sadly, we’ll probably just end up with another Grifting Whore, lil Icky-Ricky Frothy Mixture, pulling ahead in the horse race.
Gad, what a loathsome despicable buncha lousy protoplasm this Klown Kar Republican “Primary” Kabuki Show is.
Sad to witness that this is what’s offered up for the populace to vote for. yuck.
It’s because the minks are meaner than most wolverines. I was solidly against fur until I met my first cage of minks. They tried to eat me, after peeing on my shirt. Through the cage.
Skinning is too good for them. A large mink comforter is only about $1400 or so anymore.
Boxturtle (Pee on me, willya?)
I dunno, but I have read that the former USSR republics, esp Russia, have a lot of mink farming going on. Used to be a lot of black marketing going on, which was probably much more lucrative when the Iron Curtain was in place. Methinks they ended up with an over-supply over the years.
Seems the FBI director louie had to quash this one.
heh… guess that makes me feel better about my dearly departed mom & auntie’s mink coats and jackets. All those ladies in the 1950s had ‘em. The question is, in these days, what do you do with ‘em now??? If someone wears ‘em ya get castigated (or worse). But they don’t wear out for a long long time. My sibs have them in the backs of their closets.
yeah: can’t let that little “truth” get out. maybe that’s why the “nooz” media is making free with Newter’s 2d wife getting to publically dish & diss Newticles??? Easier to go the route of so-called “family values,” rather than pulling back the curtain on the real chicanery – eh?
Not this winter. Since we’ve been here the temperature hasn’t fallen below -6 celsius. We are talking warm. The other thing is that they overheat the buildings, so if you wear sweaters outside, you sweat like a pig as soon as you go inside. A lot has changed in the 25 years since we first came here, but that is not one of them.
“Gad, what a loathsome despicable buncha lousy protoplasm this Klown Kar Republican “Primary” Kabuki Show is.” Yes, but they are well-matched, all things considered, by the POS who will be put up as representing “our” side.
Aha. See, knowing a little promoted the conversation.
I wonder if you could breed the meanness out.
Freeh. Another hero of the Motherland.
Jeezuz haz a sad. But he’s still got that other Rick…
On that point, I do not disagree with you. No shit.
The other place I saw a lot of mink coats was in Florence in the winter. I had come completely unprepared for cold weather, as it was only a weekend on my biz trip, when the amount of time spent outdoors was nil (from meeting to car service to another meeting to car service to a/p to flight, you get the picture) and I didn’t want to schlep a coat along.
I was astonished by all the minks in a climate that doesn’t get that cold. But then I found out they don’t heat historic buildings in the winter, so I nearly froze when I attended mass at the cathedral and barely moved for over an hour. (There’s the occasional kneeling & standing bit, but that doesn’t warm you up.) Ditto the museums, like Uffizzi. Then I understood the mink coats.
Overheating bldgs in winter is ridiculous, even if you have a lot of oil. Not good for your health.
Within the last few days, I saw a list of all the things Freeh didn’t do over the years. I just scanned it and don’t remember where I saw it, so can’t link or provide examples, but it was impressive. A real defender of PTB. (Was prolly related to lack of financial fraud prosecutions.)
You found a Time magazine in the dentist office? I would consider changing dentists. That’s like finding a cubic hair on the bar of soap.
Don’t all these shits just work for the 1%?
Since when did they ever work for the benefit of the 99%??
It’s gotten a lot worse of the past few decades. One of the things that Chris Hedges brought up in his in-depth interview on book-tv was how much the U.S. had changed in the 2 decades he had spent war reporting overseas.
If you live in the U.S. continuously, you don’t notice it so much. Frog boil cliche.
It’s really quite a remarkable thing to contemplate the actual performance records of all those we naively depended upon to keep our society functioning properly over the years. Puts me in quite a bloody mood, actually, and it’s probably a very good thing that I’m too old and feeble to do anything about it.
I suppose you’re correct on that. Nixon seemed perfectly horrid, but in retrospect, the worst began under Zombie Reagan (actually under the puppetmasters who “ran” Reagan, which includes my favorite “enemey,” Henry the K) and has progressed apace since then.
I lived overseas for over 8 years in the late ’70s to mid-80s. I can tell you that it was truly quite a shock to return to Reagan’s reign in Team USA, and to witness the brainwashing of my family, which had begun even back then.
You’re right: frog boiling, etc.
PS on Edit: hence, I can relate to how Hedges felt when he returned after 2 decades!! Must’ve been bloody frightening!
well you can still do *something* about it by, at least, supporting Occupy & other initiatives like that. Just saying… :-)
I do that, of course, but in my younger days I would definitely have been into more direct action. I believe it will take direct action to really change things for the better.
Wasn’t there a sort of heat wave in Moscow last winter? I mean, higher temps than normal. There definitely was a heat wave in the summer, which I believe had bad effects because they’re so not-used to hot weather.
No climate change, no sirreee!
