While multiple recent polls have found Newt Gingrich leading in dozens of states, Mitt Romney has managed to retain his big lead in New Hampshire. According to the most recent Suffolk/7NEWS (PDF) poll Romney holds an 18 point lead in the race over second place Gingrich.
Mitt Romney ……………………………… 38%
Newt Gingrich ……………………………. 20%
Jon Huntsman …………………………….. 13%
Ron Paul ……………………………………… 8%
Michele Bachmann ……………………….. 3%
Rick Santorum ……………………………… 2%
Buddy Roemer …………………………….. 2%
Herman Cain ……………………………… 2%
Rick Perry ……………………………………. 1%
Gary Johnson ……………………………… 1%
Fred Karger ………………………………… 0%
Undecided (DO NOT READ) ………… 11%
The one worrying sign for Romney here is that Jon Huntsman seems to haveĀ gained some traction in New Hampshire, it being basically the sole focus of his campaign.
I still don’t think Huntsman has a shot of winning but he could theoretically cause Romney some problems. He could take enough support from Romney in New Hampshire that Romney is seen as underperforming expectations in the first primary.
Similarly a strong second or third place finish for Huntsman could make the media narrative the week after New Hampshire all about Hunstman’s strong finish instead of the expected Romney’s win. If Huntsman gets a good week of press, it is easy to picture how he could then end up siphoning some support away from Romney in South Caroline and Florida.

I have a certain amount of sympathy for the GOPers. They don’t want their most electable candidate, they want anybody else. But nobody else can even beat Obama!
The GOP is, however, doing better than the Dems are. At least the GOP has a choice.
Boxturtle (all I want for Xmas is a credible primary challenger. And a pony)
I have always maintained that people in NH are way smarter than the ones in SC and FL.
I rest my case.

You know what they say, “Gotta dance with the one who brung ya’.”
I see Perry and Huntsman have “swapped” positions. Being from TExas, I told you guys Perry would shoot himself in the foot. I ust admit, however, I didn;t think he’d take off that many toes on one foot.
Does a strong performance by Huntsman in New Hampshire make him a viable candidate? And given that he’s still a Republican, although not batshit insane, is that anything we should care about?
I don’t think so. Remember he’s in LAST PLACE among Mormons.
Gosh darn! I’m really excited about this turn of events! Wow!
Does it really matter much? Big deal.
Maybe there will be some gigantic turn of events and changes of hearts in eye-oh-way soon. How excited can anyone be about a nobody leading a pack of nothings? This is a media boondoggle.
My greatest fear is the Media will do its job find out about Mitt’s Bain Capital outsourcing jobs or putting local workers out of business then Huntsman wins.
Imagine Obama without the public baggage Huntsman could easily beat Obama if the GOP voters were to elect him.
I am still not voting O but Huntsman would be no change from current WH policies.
Thankfully the MSM is lazy and GOP voters are really insane this year.
With Perry and Bachmann fading and Cain out of the race, the media and especially the comedians are having to “circle the wagons”. But I have faith in the remaining candidates, including Obama from his side, that they, with a reborn resolve, continue to make this the most memorable presidential race of ALL times.
God bless us every one.
Rocky Anderson. All these R’s are Peggy Lee candidates.

Sure if Mitt gets taken out of the race but thats not likely. Newt getting taken out of the race before New Hampshire is much more likely but Newt’s voters won’t go his way. Mitt’s will.
Seriously, I COULD vote for Huntsman. He LOOKS just as presidential as Romney. Maybe more so.
come back…
BSb, what you got against Peggy Lee?
D-Day sait it last week. When the primaries move out of the “crazy states” in February, Newt is toast.
Nothing but her big hit was “Is that all there is”
Just noticed……Santorum is WAAAY up.
Oh……I get it. That’s VERRY good. Can I use that at the precinct meeting next Monday?
Sorry. Can I use that at the precinct meeting next week? PLEASE
I stole it from Tug McGraw who used it to describe his fastball so feel free.
I think the networks are praying (and no doubt actively working for) a hung convention. They need the advertiser money. I don’t see many Republican paymasters wasting money on any of these losers in the general election. Given the party’s disarray, it doesn’t even win them good will. They are better off simply bribing Congressmen and their staff with juicy lobbying gigs.
Agreed.

I’m not sure how old you are, but, way back before the primaries decided evetything BEFORE the convention, it was fun and exciting. I, remember, even though I was young, the excitement inour house watching the 1960 democratic and the 1968 republican convention. Really, it WAS exciting.
“a hung convention”
Man, I have the funniest damn line. But, you guys are gonna have to take my word for it.
I don’t know about smarter, but I do know that people in New Hampshire take the primary seriously. They research the candidates, go out to meet and talk to them at events, and then turn out to vote their choice.
It helps the candidates, also, because they get to talk to voters one on one, and hone their campaign speeches during the runup to the primary, in a smallish state where such a thing is possible. The so-called “retail politics”.
The good old days…when reality WAS a reality show.
All kidding aside, you are, of course, right. NH takes their “responsibility” seriously. Thank God.
