While Democratic-leaning voters’ enthusiasm about voting in the 2012 election has remained essentially unchanged since September, there has been a big drop in enthusiasm among Republican-leaning voters. In September Gallup found 58 percent of Republican voters were more enthusiastic about voting in the upcoming election but now that number has dropped to only 49 percent. What was once a huge enthusiasm in favor of the GOP has narrowed to near parity. From Gallup:
While this is good news for elected Democrats, elected Democrats didn’t earn this. They have not managed to excite their base for 2012.
Elected Democrats are merely benefiting from the fact that the Republican leaders have managed to sap the energy out of their own supporters, bringing their enthusiasm down to roughly the level the Democratic leaders had already reduced their own base to months ago.
Sadly though when you have a two party system you don’t need to be doing a good job to win, you just need to be doing less lousy than the other party.
