Two new polls put Newt Gingrich squarely in the lead in the Iowa Caucus. On Sunday the Des Moines Register released its poll by Selzer & Co. showing Gingrich leading with 25 percent. From the Des Moines Register:
Gingrich, with support of 25 percent of likely Republican caucus goers, is seven points ahead of the rising Ron Paul, who’s at 18 percent. Mitt Romney drops to third, at 16 percent, denting his previously armor-plated Iowa polling average. Romney’s support stood at 22 percent last month.
And this morning the NBC/Marist poll also found Gingrich ahead with roughly a quarter of the likely caucus voters. From MSNBC:
In Iowa, which holds its caucuses on Jan. 3, Gingrich gets the support of 26 percent of likely caucus-goers (including those leaning towards a candidate) — a 21-point jump since October.
He’s followed by Romney at 18 percent (an eight-point decline), Texas Rep. Ron Paul at 17 percent (a five-point increase), Herman Cain at 9 percent (an 11-point drop) and Texas Gov. Rick Perry at 9 percent (a two-point dip). No other Republican presidential candidate gets more than 5 percent support among likely caucus-goers.
While Gingrich’s lead isn’t large — 3/4 of Iowa GOP voters would still prefer someone else — he currently has the momentum in the race. With less than one month until the Iowa caucus, barring yet another significant change in the direction, it’s likely that Gingrich is heading towards a victory in the state.

i still think Rp is going to win iowa
I think Ron Paul has a great chance too. Especially if Iowans think about what Newt has accomplished. Hint: not much.

I have to HOPE that Paul wins Iowa too. If, then, Romney wins NH handily, that should dilute the fact that the dastardly, depicable Gingrich is likely heading for a win in SC and FL. THEN, and only THEN will the race really be “ON”.
or as ghostof911 called him ” newt Gangrene” , fitting I would say.
Newt will win in Iowa. The only person who has the money to stop him is Mitt and the entire thrust of Newt’s campaign is that a large portion of the GOP voters want nothing to do with Mitt and another large segment is about as enthusiatic about Mitt as we are about Obama.
Where are Mitt’s oppo people? They should have Newt nailed to his past by now. Unless the media’s owners have decided to protect Newt. There’s been an odd lack of negative press.
Boxturtle (Perry is gonna have to out-newt newt to have any chance of recovery)
I dunno. Paul is gonna have money issues, Newt most certainly is not.
Boxturtle (I think if Paul wins, you’ll see a new level of panic in the country club wing)
I love Newtie. He’s the most fun to make fun of. He’s just smart enough (the rest are all stupid as stones and/or dull). Newt is also irascible enough to come out with some crafty barbs that can be admired, like forcing children to clean toilets. (Why didn’t I think of that when my son was young.)
Good points. Had me scratching my head, too. The lack of oppo is making me think that perhaps the Money Boys, Inc., are now backing Newticles bc they realize the fundies’ll never vote for Magic Undies no matter what.
Not that it matters. To endlessly repeat myself: whomever the 1% want to “win,” shall “win,” and my bet is on 0bama (not my choice, just saying…).
Newt doesn’t have a ground game in Iowa. How can he turn polls into supporters?
Mitt does have the cash to hammer Newt yet he doesn’t. What? Is he trying to show fiscal responsibility? He could just run video of Newt lying, saying don’t quote him or YOU”RE lying, show his wicked, wicked past. All true. Yet Mitts wastes his mind making up total fabrications of Obama. I guess there’s a lot to dislike about Mitts too. And he’s a scary Mormon, you bible thumpers. I say Ron Paul takes Iowa.
By not being Mitt. He doesn’t really need to do anything except that.
Boxturtle (As it stands, his best shot is to say/do nothing and let the others kill themselves)
I’m at a loss to figure out Ron Paul’s attraction. Yes, I know he is for the most part an isolationist, which doesn’t go over well with the military/industrial complex crowd, but the guy’s views on regulation are out of the 19th Century Gilded Age. Support for him comes from the crowd who also go to Star Trek conventions. They aren’t supporters, they’re groupies.
I think it would be fun to see the Newtster and Obama against one another. That would also give us another year to laugh at and ridicule that skinned rabbit, albino android wife of his.
At this point in 2007 everyone was saying, “McCain Who?” about the former heir apparent.
I still stand by my prediction that the next G.O.P. nominee will be Romney.
The wealthy young love Paul because he is pure Rand and also would legalize all recreational drugs. Wall Street loves Paul because he is pure Rand. He would I think be the choice of the Koch bros. if they could be convinced he might win. I would find a win for him in Iowa particularly disturbing for this and other reasons.
I don’t see the Koch brothers having much influence over Paul. He’s too eccentric and unmalleable for them. They like the dumb-dumbs like Cain, Perry and Scott Walker. They do what they’re told.
I have to agree. The despicable Koch brothers are “out of candidates” with Perry sinking and Cain’s campaign “suspended”. Frankly, I’m glad to get them out of the “show”. The next departures from the GOP Clown Car will be Santorum and Bachhmann. The only question in my mind is what happens to Huntsman????
In today’s FDL interview with Mitt Romney, he comes across as just awful. What an utterly bland phony! The Republican base is actually correct about him.
I thought Gingrich’s fundraising fell apart when all his fundraisers quit.
