President Obama is currently tied with Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential race among registered voters according to Gallup. Obama and Romney are tied both nationally and in the “swing states.” Obama does manage to hold a very small lead over Rick Perry and Herman Cain. From Gallup:

2012 General Election Trial Heats, Nationally and in Swing States, October 2011

While Obama and Romney are tied among registered voters, what matters on election day is not the opinion of all registered voters but how the people who actually show up to vote decide to cast their ballots. Here Obama has a serious problem. The Republican base is significantly more enthusiastic about voting than the Democratic base. Nationally Gallup found 56 percent of Republicans are extremely or very enthusiastic about voting while only 48 percent of Democrats say the same thing.

If the general election were taking place today between Obama and Romney, it is likely that Romney would win. Of course a lot can change over the next year.
