Since Texas Governor Rick Perry entered the Republican primary just two weeks ago, he has skyrocketed to the position of front runner in all major national polls. The recent CNN/ORC International poll is the latest to show Perry with a double digit lead over his competition. From CNN:

CNN/ORC International poll 08/24-25

Perry 27%
Romney 14%
Palin 10%
Bachmann 9%
Giuliani 9%
Gingrich 6%
Paul 6%
Cain 2%
Johnson 2%
Huntsman 1%
Santorum 1%
McCotter ***
Someone else 3%
None/No One 5%
No Opinion 3%

Last week’s polls from national pollsters Gallup and PPP show Perry leading by 12-13 points over second place Mitt Romney. While we are still many months away from the first primary votes, at this moment Perry is the front runner.

With that position comes increased scrutiny. The big question is, can Perry hold on to this lead as the increased scrutiny allows the general public to become more aware of some of his less-than-mainstream views, such as the belief that Social Security is a Ponzi scheme and a monstrous lie for young people?
