President Obama’s job approval rating hits its lowest level yet in Gallup’s daily tracking polling. The three day rolling average found only 38 percent approve of the job Barack Obama is doing as president while 54 percent disapprove.
Since the end of May, when Obama’s approval rating was last over 50 percent, Obama job approval numbers have been trending steadily downward.
This drop in support for Obama since late May closely tracks with Gallup’s finding that there has been a large increase in the number of Americans who rate the economy as poor and a large drop in the number of people who believe the economy is getting better.
The poor state of the economy is clearly dragging down Obama’s job approval numbers, although the sharpness of the recent trend is probably exaggerated by the higher levels Obama achieved immediately following the killing of Osama bin Laden in early May. That likely temporarily boosted Obama numbers, but the bump from that was probably going to fade even without the continuing bad economic news.
With American’s economic confidence extremely low but seemingly stable for now, it will be interesting to see if disapproval of Obama’s job performance also reach a plateau or continues trending upward.

Wasn’t all that long ago we sneered at the 28 percenters, and I see no reason to change!
I guess when you say you want to cut SS and Medicare people don’t like it. Go figure.
Obama may well have dug his own hole here.
Time to start another war!
Wag the dog!
More to the point, the national economy for the bottom 95% of the population has worsened under his presidency.
Not to worry, I am sure after Obama guts Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, those number will bounce back./s
By next spring Obama is going to be unelectable.
I sure hope the Dems are maneuvering in the shadows to have someone ready to jump into the race.
Mustn’t. Blame. Racism.
This is the price he’s paying for refusing to meet the Republicans
1/2 3/4 7/8 15/1631/32 way.You beat me to the punch.
President Obama seems hellbent on making changes (not for the better) to Social Security.
He’s waiting until Labor Day to come out with his jobs package? What the hell has he been thinking about for the last year?
Every time I get to the point of giving him the benefit of the doubt for 2012, he comes up with something else why I shouldn’t vote for him.
I truly think that even the craziness of the Republican candidates is not going to be enough to convince true Democrats to not sit out.
But we’re going to get Ghadaffi goddamnit! Clap LOUDER you on-drugs, retards. /s
Time for another move to the center.
Obama couldn’t find his center with both hands.
This poll provides definite proof of Obama’s lack of “brilliance”: if Obama was cleverly making multiple political cave-ins to the GOP – and thereby making the WRONG decision for the nation again and again right in the face of expert opinion all around him – in order to enhance his chances for re-election, then by making all of these wrong decisions he is now clearly destroying the nation’s economy and causing the American electorate to rightfully despise him. Wow, the man is not only an incompetent President, but also an incompetent politician – and that is really saying something.
oh, spew! snort!
Can he pass shrub’s low of 29% ?
Inquiring minds are puzzled .
Obama, everytime you find your center, all you do is massage it.
Here’s more proof on how much Obama hated the Dorgan Amendment to re-import drugs. The Obama admin just made Google pay a half BILLION dollar fine for running online ads for Canadian pharmacies that would sell to the US!:
http://news.yahoo.com/google-says-shouldnt-allowed-canada-drug-ads-155623178.html
obama should never have been elected president. Talking points of the republicans: he never did anything when he was in the Illinois state senate. He voted present so as to not having any history. After serving as a senator in the federal government in 2005, he started running for president in 2006. He got elected because he was black (because of our collective guilt) – and by the way, I don’t feel any guilt. He wasn’t bush, and he lied to the american people. He is an abomination, he’s as bad as bush, even worse.
disgusting.
Welcome to 30% land! What took Shrub Jr. almost 6 years, the Big Zero has accomplished in less than half the time. I guess “Liberals” really are smarter, after all.
My personal preference is to look at the RCP average of several polls. The RCP average is now 43/51 approve/disapprove, compared to his starting figures in January 2009 of 62/19.
Looking at the trend lines we see that Obama’s unpopularity is generally trending upwards, overcoming popularity boosts in January (Tucson) and May (bin Laden). Those are an indication of how events can control polls, and the president can control some (not all, certainly) events.
In the era of black box voting these polls mean nothing. Shrub’s numbers a few weeks before his “re-election,” 2004 Oct 29-31 was 48/47 approve/disapprove.

Corporatist know who gives them butter for their bread.
Let’s hope he can learn from this experience. The signs of this happening are not promising. We got sold a bum product, like American cars in te 70s and 80s.
did you forget your not on dkos?
Despite all the frustration and anger over Obama, which I share, what’s the alternative? Staying at home come election day, or voting for some obscure Third Party so you can pat yourself on the back? Can anyone here even think seriously about this pack of mutants on the GOP side? A govt. where the GOP controls all branches will totally gut SS/Medicare, and that will only be one of their more moderate measures. Somewhere in the world they’ll find a new group of brown people to kick the crap out of – they always do. The National Security State must be fed.
If you are of the school that things have to get much (much) worse before they get better, then by all means vote for the cretinous cowpoke, or $2 dollar a gallon Michele, or the guy who says “corporations are people, my friend.”
I’ve just come to the conclusion that we are screwed. I think the immigration offices in Canada will be working overtime.
The only events that would persuade me to vote for Obama would be if the racism that drives Republican and conservative thought is exposed as a real issue. As long as Obama tries to compromise his race with those such as Tom Coburn who view and present him as a member of an inferior group that loves dependency and parasitizes the white “job creators” I see no distinction between a vote for him and any other conservative.
That said I emphasize to expose and defeat the racist notions on the right would be good reason to vote for Obama.
Yes it has I agree. It is nothing but Shock Doctrine Disaster Capitalism. His Neo-Liberal policies are right out of the IMF playbook. Nothing this man does surprises me.
Why do you say he is incompetent he has and will accomplish the Republicans wet dream. Everything is going according to his plan.
Time for another pivot to jobs.
I prefer Mexico, myself. But whatever one’s choice there are other places to live, and many Americans take advantage of the alternatives. An estimated 3 million to 6 million Americans reside abroad. Mexico undoubtedly houses more American expatriates than any other country in the world with as many as a million.
And my gut feeling is that he doesn’t even care about reelection. Obama wanted to be the first AA Prez and he made it. After that nothing matters to him.
I’ve been saying for some time that ‘Barry don’t care.’ and nothing he does makes me change my mind.
In 2013 he’ll end up on numerous boards, travel the world making millions in speaking fees and otherwise reminding us what a worthless turd he turned out to be.
Has America ever had two worse presidents back-to-back?
Dear God….let’s make poor people pay alot more for drugs while pharma costs us blind….Just make me gag.
I only picked Canada because I’m too damn lazy to learn a new language, and besides, I hear that their healthcare system isn’t too bad.
Mexico’s healthcare access system may be worse than the US.
Sounds like you were against him from day one, since you spout off the standard GOP talking points. I wonder how much the RNC pays you for hauting these sites?
Say what one want against Obama, but he’s not worse than Bush. No one has been. Besides , Bush was the Walmart greeter of that administration. Cheney controlled all the levers behind the scene.
Gotta be pretty well off financially to just pick up and move out of the country. Transportation costs to visit family wouldn’t be cheap. What about pets, give ‘em away or have ‘em euthanized? Speak a foreign language or be just another ugly American? Or just bitter and lonely to begin with?
Most American ex-pats in Mexico live in gringo communities (with their pets) and never see a Mexican except in shops or doing their yardwork. Kind of like here (in the Southwest). And the weather’s better than Canada, for sure. Think about it. Drop us a note.
Time for Hillary?
Thanks for answering my question. Never liked the ugly American ex-pats I’ve met in various countries. Neither did the locals.
Some people in conservative societies just have an aversion to green polo shirts worn over plaid shorts. Go figure.
Gringo communities? Like a ghetto or a gated community for seniors in Arizona. No thanks. By the way, some of us like cooler weather.
But the cost of living and low cost of domestic and home health care help is so much lower that in the long run it makes financial sense for many on fixed incomes.
I heard a woman on PBS interviewed who was moving to Costa Rica for those same reasons. She said she was sad and would miss her family but if she stayed here she would lose her home and be a financial burden to them.
Yes. I have friends and some family doing the same thing. Mexico and Panama.
Dream on. The Canadians have high standards for immigrants; very few of us can qualify.
I don’t see Hillary as much better. She is a much a warmonger as Obama, she recently came out with praise for the austerity measures in Europe. Maybe (who knows) she wouldn’t be as much in favor as Obama to begin the destruction of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
I don’t really see anyone on the national scene who will stand up for the poor, working class and middle class. I’m not sure Hillary would.
Ah, are you still believing that the USA has a good health care system? I have lived in Mexico and found their health care to be superior.
Hillary was Rupert Murdoch’s first choice, pushing hard for her nomination in the 2007-08 primaries. Probably a quid pro quo for favorable News Corp regulatory treatment in U.S. markets. I don’t see this as a choice for the bottom 95% of America

They’ll through their support behind Obama 2.0 – Romney.
Obama is Bush/Cheney 3.0, so that would make Romney Bush/Cheney 4.0
Did everybody conveniently forget that he was a Chicago politician and that his “mentor” in the Senate was Joe “Israel” Lieberman? Only a presidency such as that of “W”, coupled with propaganda from the corporate MSM, could have paved the way for Obama to win the election.
I stand corrected, unless he would just be a continuation of Clinton before them, which was a continuation of G.H.W.Bush, which was a continuation of St. Ronald, who was G.H.W.’s front man.
Don’t give up on Barrack, we need to stand by him more than ever.Che said many times that we have to take baby steps sometimes.
The US has great med technology and a wealth of specialities and hospitals. Where it absolutely sucks is the access to that quality.
Healthcare shouldn’t be subjected to market forces. Call me quaint, but the wino on the street should have the same access to quality healthcare as a corporate CEO.
The easy question is, why are Obama’s ratings so high now? The more difficult question is, why were Obama’s ratings so high in May of this year? A reasonable question in response to these silly polls is, if these ratings actually reflect Americans’ opinions of Pres. Obama’s job performance, wouldn’t we all benefit from restricting voter eligibility?
We lease a little one room apartment overlooking a beach near Puerto Vallarta to spend winter in..
Mexico is gorgeous, great food, and the village takes very good care of their gringo snowbirds and our dinero..
I am not as certain as others that Obama’s problems are rooted in racism. He was elected with a solid majority and he was as black then as he is now. What has happened in the interim is a lack of leadership which has nothing to do with race. The disappointing decline in his approval is a direct reflection on his tenure as President and not on some newly found racial identity.
Good points, holybuybull.
Just as I was hitting the submit button on #51, I thought — naaaaw, this goes all the way back to Nixon, where Cheney & Rumsfeld ran the White House after Haldeman & Ehrlich were thrown under the bus.
I hope your comment was supposed to be snark. Che would have recognized Obama as the corporate prostitute he is from the start.
You and I must be on similar wavelengths. Of course, Nixon was the hand picked VP candidate that Prescott Bush foisted on Ike. The Bush aristocracy has been a plague upon this country for ages.
He’s pandering the the AA base now in ways that mean little but give people enough (false) hope his heart is in the right place.

There’s a reason MLK was a socialist and it wasn’t just because he thought socialists would better help AA’s climb the corporate and political ladders. Without working to improve the high unemployment rate among AA’s and other minorities, and the related causes and effects of that, these gestures just wreak of rotten campaign pandering.
Like they care what people say. Whatever Republican monster that is going to follow Obama will just pick up Obama left off.
Yep that’s what I said in #27 and #28. It doesn’t really matter who is Prez. He has his strings pulled and the next one will as well. A little O/T but not really watch the documentary “Inside Job” that is a pretty good synopsis of what has gone on the last 30+ years. Took me a while to figure it out but I think I have a pretty good handle on the way it works now.
