Rick Perry Leads in Iowa

American for Rick Perry by Gage Skidmore

Having only just entered the race to become the Republican Presidential nominee, Texas Governor Rick Perry is already leading in Iowa according to PPP. In a poll only containing the confirmed candidates, Perry currently leads with 22 percent of the vote. From PPP:

What if neither Sarah Palin nor Paul Ryan ran for President, and the candidates were just Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, Jon Huntsman, Ron Paul, Rick Perry, Mitt Romney, and Rick Santorum. Who would you vote for?
22%… Rick Perry
19… Mitt Romney
18… Michele Bachmann
16… Ron Paul
7… Herman Cain
5… Newt Gingrich
5… Rick Santorum
3… Jon Huntsman
5… Someone else/Not sure

With numbers like this it is no surprise why Perry was tempted to get in the race. Clearly there is a strong desire among Republican primary voters for someone who is seen as genuinely very conservative (i.e. not Romney) but with a better résumé, stronger election track record, and less negative baggage than Michele Bachmann. Perry at least right now fits the bill.
