Americans love their Medicare and would strong oppose the Republican goal to eliminate and replace it with a private voucher program in even the best of economic times. Yet what makes the Paul Ryan Medicare privatization plan such a powerful political weapon for Democrats at the moment is how incredibly tone deaf it was to push forward in this particular economic climate.
With our currently terrible economy, Gallup found that the top two financial worries for Americans at the moment are not having enough saved for retirement and not being able to pay major for medical expenses.
Both of these top two concerns would get dramatically worse if the Republican plan for Medicare was ever enacted. The Republican plan would require people to save much more for their retirement than they currently need to because the plan’s insufficiently small vouchers would significantly increase health care cost for seniors.
Instead of trying to address regular Americans top worries right now, the entire Republican party actually rallied around plan that would make the situation even more frightening.
The Republicans have handed the Democrats a gift by putting forward a plan so incredibly inappropriate for the moment. Democrats just need to not give the GOP a political out by agree to any Medicare cuts in the current budget negotiations.
