In Minnesota, a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage is going to appear on the 2012 ballot, where it will likely become a big focus of activism this election on both sides. From Minnesota Public Radio:
A proposed constitutional ban on same-sex marriage is headed for the state’s 2012 general election ballot.
The Minnesota House voted 70-62 Saturday to put the measure before voters, ending several days of competing prayer and hope at the State Capitol.
Inside the House chamber, the debate was some was some of the most personal and wrenching in memory.
Measures banning marriage equality appeared on the ballot in several states in 2004 and were thought to modestly increase turnout among Christian Conservatives, helping the Republican Party.
It is unlikely to have the same impact in 2012 because, since 2004, there has been a huge swing in public support toward marriage equality. Gallup just this month found for the first time ever a majority of Americans in favor of the law recognizing same-sex marriage.
Given the clear trend toward greater acceptance and the huge age divide on the issue, this might be one of the last elections where conservatives think it is a good idea to put the issue before the voters.

What’s happening with Prop H8 in CA?
You called it, Jon.
This Republican trick of “put something on the ballot to get the rabid nuts out to vote” has just about run out of time.
This will never pass here. They couldn’t get it through the legistlature like 10 years ago, and it would have failed in 2004. Minnesotans will never pass this.
Like Tim Manchin and religion, if I’m proven wrong and it passes I’ll gladly run through the streets of both Twin Cities downtowns screaming my contrition. Then I’ll get a tattoo that says “fancy that” on my cock.
I feel safe. It’s never happening.
The Regressives are beginning to remind me of the little boy who is standing too close to the subway tracks and his mom sez, “Junior, come away from there. That train will come by and suck you off.” The little boy looks down the track and sez, “Come onnnn, train!!!”
Exactly. Especially when the MN GOP wasted time they could have spent on the budget and actual jobs bills on crap like this — which is now being called “the Bradlee Dean Bill” in honor of the antigay, antiSemitic dickwad the House GOP had serve as chaplain last Friday, the day this thing was originally slated to pass. (The firestorm over Dean’s appearance — and the realization of a growing number of GOP House Members that voting for this thing was going to make Bradlee Dean their running mate next year — is what delayed it for a day as GOP Speaker Kurt Zellers went all Paths of Glory on his caucus to keep them in line.)
Just more proof that the religious rightwingers are only interested in pushing their agenda. “Jobs, what jobs? We don’t give a crap about people already here (unless you’re gay)–we only care about the unborn until they’re born. After that, you’re on your own…especially if I’ve already got mine.”
The intent is to get the Fundies, the Rapturists, the Baggers and the troglodytes to the polls in 2012.
The funniest thing of all is that the whole solution to this “problem” is so easy it fits on a little button. Pictured above too, imagine that.
Wait, are there any of those left after Saturday?
Does this mean I don’t get lots of free stuff?
Dammit.
Man, hurts thinking about it.
I’ll be hoping for the right outcome in Minnesota. For your sake. And your, ahm, well…. for your sake.
People, people, please wake up! Don’t you recognize a red herring issue when you see one? What is the most important thing about the facts at issue on this subject?
The most important thing, and lefties are as guilty of the obfuscation as anyone else, is that we do not HAVE a ballot.
Same sex unions, abortion, and yes, even voter ID – these are all issues ‘liberals’ can discuss without ever mentioning that the manner and operation of voting machinery has been hugely suspect ever since we got those electronic voting machines and manipulatable counting procedures.
That’s where ANY discussion about ‘voting’ should begin – otherwise it is all a game that the powerful play with us, and issues such as the above are a huge distraction until it comes to the day before the vote and you realize you don’t know what or how or why the process can be trusted.
It’s setting out to sea in the leakiest tub on the planet. We need to fix it! Paper ballots counted by hand. Take a month to do it; I can wait. Otherwise, I quit!
Since there’s no post anywhere on FDL that I can find that will tell you this, NY 26 went Democratic.
Odd… This sort of information used to be front page stuff…
