For the first time since Gallup has been polling the issue the pollster has found a clear majority of Americans now favor a law recognizing same-sex marriage.

1996-2011 Trend: Do you think marriages between same-sex couples should or should not be recognized by the law as valid, with the same rights as traditional marriages?

The poll found that support for marriage equality surged in the last year among Democrats from 56 percent to 69 percent, and among Independents from 49 percent to 59 percent. Support for gay marriage among Republicans, however, remains totally unchanged with only 28 percent of Republicans in favor.

Clearly, on this issue, the Republicans are going to find themselves on the wrong side of a demographic divide. An overwhelming 70 percent of Americans under 35 support marriage equality. The makes the trend toward growing acceptance both clear and unstoppable.
