In a surprise upset, Illinois’ 8th district incumbent Representative, Democrat Melissa Bean, conceded to Tea Party-backed Republican Joe Walsh after losing by less than 300 votes. From the Chicago Sun Times:
By a margin of 291 votes out of more than 200,000 cast, GOP challenger Joe Walsh emerged Tuesday as the winner over U.S. Rep. Melissa Bean in their nail-biting 8th District congressional race.
Bean, a three-term Democrat, made the results official late Tuesday, conceding the contest after calling Walsh to congratulate him on his upset victory.
Bean was a member of the Blue Dog caucus and the New Democrat Coalition. Bean voted in support of President Obama’s health care reform; she was one of only 15 Democrats to support the Central American Free Trade Act (CAFTA), and one of only four Dems to side with Republicans against the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.
With this contest finally over, there are now only five undecided House races. In two of the races, CA-11 and CA-20, the Democrats currently hold the lead while in the other three, NY-01, NY-25, TX-27, the Republicans are ahead in the vote count.

Bye bye Melissa. Don’t let the door hit you in your backside.
Well, that was relatively quick.
I guess Obama’s floating Bean as a trial balloon-turd gimme to Wall Street, as he kicks Elizabeth Warren in the teeth, is pretty good job security.
Be interesting to see if Maddow does a little follow-up interview with Warren, and deigns to discuss this, down the road.
So, what you’re saying is one of the two Republicans running in IL-08 lost to the other?
This was the one that Rahm backed.
Bean is a Corporate Blue Dog Dem the other guy is a Tea Bagger the district has a strong Fundy GOP wing thats been battling the Corporate Types for control of the local GOP for years.
What do we know about this guy?
This is a very GOP district its Rummy’s old District 300 votes in a district that Red? The GOP should have one this easy.
They would have, if they’d run a moderate Republican. Instead they went with a teabagger.

Interesting insight, PW. Well, there you have it. Blue Dog LOSER to Tea-Bagger. Sums it all up. Thanks for the info.
Melissa got elected the first time the year Gov Ryan got in trouble for giving a Hispanic Immigrant a drivers license he did not deserve and he ran over a ministers car killing his wife and kids.
Another Ryan got into a sex scandal that year and had to withdraw leaving Obama facing Alan Keyes. Alan’s adopted Daughter outed herself as Gay during the campaign.
Another GOPer Ryan was involved in the Rolando Cruz case the Cops put away a Mexican for years for the crime letting a White serial killer kill more victims. The Serial Killer confessed in return for no death penalty rumors are Mexican prison gangs protected him so that his testimony could free Rolondo Cruz.
Also Cal Skinner happened the election before then the local paper told Melissa’s district that their state Rep after he lost that election was accused of being a child molester and his wife had fled with their kid for years.
It would have been nice to know that before the election but hey its a GOP paper.
Nobody GOP was winning that year.
True we have a chance to take this district next time.
300 votes and she didn’t ask for a re-count?
I assume this means she knows she a lock for the Financial Consumer Protection Agency.
Stel:
Bingo! :o)
Why doesn’t that surprise me? And the MSM think Rahm is a political genius.
When Bean supported the CAFTA free trade agreement, she argued that she had to be “centrist” and “moderate” and couldn’t side with the extremists but side with mainstream voters (or some mushy, DLC crap like that). I thought “how is it moderate/centrist” to ship jobs to other countries? That’s not mainstream. That’s right wing.
So I’m glad to see her gone. And being one of Rahm’s picks is just icing upon a beautiful cake.
This was the one that Rahm
backed.reanimatedYeah, they let the Democrits run the moderate repug.
I thought the party was pro-choice? Some choices we get these days.
Let’s not feel too sorry for Melissa Bean. I’m sure she’ll do just fine in her new gig as Director of the Bureau for Consumer Financial Protection.
It’s the rest of us we should feel sorry for…
Bena’s was like a moderate Republican, which is why she won previously. Glad to have her out of the party — another loss for the Blue dog caucs –though I suspect Obama may push her for Warren’s jobs to “Hippie fuck” his base over as usual.
No loss.
When are we gonna hippie fuck Obama?
what is “hippie fuck”?
Tony, no later than two years…maybe, sooner. The process began a bit over two weeks ago.
He’ll look good in think-tank pinstripes after only one term. :o)
Say it isn’t so! She isn’t really going to nominated by Obama for the consumer post…. Is she? Would he? WILL he?
