MSNBC is reporting that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has held on to his Nevada Senate seat, defeating GOP challenger Sharron Angle by a margin of more than five percent. Fox and CNN have also called the race for Reid.
According to MSNBC, Reid won 90% of the Hispanic vote.
This is a convincing margin for Reid, who was expected to struggle to retain his job. Reid owes his political life to unions, youth voters and Latino/a voters.
With this strong win, especially in the face of the GOP wave, will anyone in the caucus dare challenge Reid for the leadership? (Update: MSNBC’s Howard Feinman says No.)

Hope so. If winning by 5% against a complete nutjob constitutes a ‘strong win’, the definition sure has changed a lot from the one I grew up with. Given any half-reasonable opponent, Reid would be history by now.
Poor Chuckie Schumer, he was probably so sure he’d be in command tomorrow…
I am so glad we avoided the “Champion of Wall Street” becoming the Senate Majority Leader.
Reid was running Hitler daughter, Sharron Hitler.
I certainly hope Reid crushed Hitler Sharron. I could beat Hitler’s daughter Sharron.
The only happy note for me is Schumer’s certain disappointment.
True. Harry is one lucky boxer–he drew a chump, a professional opponent, as they say. And yes, our definition of “strong” has eroded.
Barney Frank, the gasbag unfortunately gets to screw the american people for another 2 years.
So we lose Grayson and keep Reid.
Sure am glad I voted and such. Be a shame if the good guys all lost while the hapless, feckless, corporate-owned Norman Rockwell-rejects kept their seats in order to bring us two more years of GOPlite legislation.
Feh.
At least it’ll be good TV when those crazy-ass chuckleheads impeach Obama.
Strong out and proud gay men – run down by naysayers.
I am so used to it.
This useless heap of protoplasm wins and Russ Feingold loses – it’s like no good work goes unpunished in DC any more.
Note to OFA/WH Operations – Pay Attention TO The Locals.
Results:
Governor: Hickenlooper
US House: of 7 incumbents, 2 Dems flip to Republicans – Blue Dogs Salazar and Markey. 3 of 4 House delegation stay Dem.
Propositions: All Anti-tax propositions FAIL
Propositions: “Personhood” FAILS
The only seat or policy in question? Bennet’s – where OFA/WH intervened on behalf of Bennet. Romanoff would have closed the deal. Idiots.
i’ll throw in reid and raise the dlc grayson and feingold any day of the year.
Reid, Schumer and Durbin are all proven leadership failures. Still I guess it’s better to have Reid in the Senate rather than Angle. I’ll be interested to learn if it was Angle’s anti-Hispanic rhetoric that cost her the race.
Agreed about Bennet: His last two years is not the kind of record you want to run on. Romanoff supporters appear vindicated tonight.
Since 1960 [LBJ] no one has effectively led the Senate. I think this half century of failure suggests that it is an institutional problem as opposed to a problem with the leadership qualities of the various Senators who have served as Majority Leader.
Now Harry. Lets hope you remember that it wasn’t the insurance companies and health care lobbyists who put you back in the senate tonight. It was all the people you fucked when you gutted heath care reform.
Angle probably won’t go too far away. Perhaps a primary challenge for Ensign?
Hispanic community is very tight with unions in Vegas due to very strong hospitality industry unions there.
Nate Silver on Harry Reid:
How did Reid’s kid do?
Last I checked, getting crushed.
Reid is the luckiest SOB I’ve seen in a while. Any “reasonable” Republican could have beat the shit out of him, but Angle wore her insanity proudly.
Reminds me when Chuck Robb (who was incredibly unpopular) beat Ollie North in Virginia in 1994.
You don’t think maybe Obama’s back room deals early in the process and then doing and end-run to go direct with Lincoln and Nelson … effectively holding the filibuster in his own pocket … maybe had more to do with the disaster that was HCR than Reid? I don’t see how Harry Reid could whip effectively in the face of WH promises of institutional support to members of his caucus that bypassed him completely … at least without a full-on civil war.
the icing on the cake….
That sucks. I actually wanted to see him lose. It would have been a lot easier to replace Angle in six years than it will be to replace Reid. Oh well, the lesser than of two evil folks can have their fun.
Yeah, voting to send Roberts’ nomination to the full senate was a good deed.
This is karma.
The single biggest bank heist in world history (TARP) passed while Senator Harry Reid was the Majority Leader. To think that there is any real difference between Harry Reid and Chuckie Schumer is pretty silly to me.
Two things are going to happen now. Either more Ghengis Khan Republican legislation gets passed or nothing gets passed. Either way, with unemployment increasing, Americas are in trouble, as they should be for voting for this three right-winged Republican Party…………
hey. stop tossing the outvoted into yer blame-basket, sweetie.
otherwise, yer prolly right: the only “progress” possible would be NOTHING getting passed, and that we can’t afford, just as before, only now no one will try.
gears are stuck.
now what, dahlin’?
quick. we need wisdom. snap snap.
oh… that was a couple years ago. dang. sometimes time passes so dang fast, and sometimes it takes forever….
and which would that be, cupcake?
“Reid owes his political life to unions, youth voters and Latino/a voters.”
Fools will never learn.
And if unions, the youth voters and the hispanic voters were smart, they would each find a way to install one their people in Reid’s office to sit there and remind him who saved his butt. And report back on who else spends their time in his office.
IOW, they need to be aggressive about protecting their investment – sort of like the Koch Brothers will be with Rand Paul…
Reid owes his re-election to the Tea Party and nothing else. In fact, the Tea Party is really Obama’s only chance in general. And Obama knows it. Also, Obama is the Republican’s only chance. A miserable situation.
