Welcome to part four of FDL midterm election night liveblog (link to part one, part two and part three). For the most recent list of FDL top 108 House races to watch tonight go here.
Polls are now closed in all states except Hawaii and Alaska. The Democrat loses in the House so far have been huge but Democrats are likely to hold on to the Senate.
11:17 pm – While Republicans might be winning big in Colorado three radical anti-tax/force the government to dramatically shrink ballot measure are all getting crushed.
11:25 pm – LA Times is projecting that Barbara Boxer (D) will keep her California Senate seat.
11:30 pm – With only 2% reporting Prop 19 is losing 42.9 – 57.1
11:33 pm – Another old bull goes down hard. In SC-05 Dem. John Spratt loses to Mick Mulvaney.
11:35 pm – All marijuana ballot measure results can be found on Just Say Now. Prop 19 is currently trailing 44.8 – 55.2 with 7% reporting.
11:39 pm – Democrats have now official lost a net total of 39 seats according to the New York Times (i.e. the majority), expect that number to grow.
11:43 pm – The silver lining for environmentalists is that big oil back Prop 23 to cripple California climate change legislation is losing badly. With 10% reporting it is yes 40.1 – No 59.9
11:46 pm – Old bull Ike Skelton (D) has lost the MO-04 to Vicky Hartzler. The waves seems to spare almost no one.
11:58 pm – Despite the race being much closer than expect, Pat Toomey (R) does manage to pull off a very narrow win in the PA Sen race.
12:06 am – Even though Democrats are losing badly in the House they will at least maintain control of the Senate.
12:08 am – A lot of loses in House loses in New York this year. Democrats have lost NY-29, NY-24, NY-20, NY-19
12:13 am – In Arizona Prop 203 for medical marijuana remains very close with 46% reporting. It is yes 49 – no 51.
12:15 am – Mark Kirk (R) has just won the IL Senate race.
12:20 am – John Kasich (R) has unseated Ted Strickland (D) in the Ohio governor race.
12:32 am – Some surprisingly bad news for Democrats. Republican Bob Dold manages to narrowly hold on to Mark Kirk’s old district, IL-10.
12:37 am – I guess an candidate can really be just too awful/crazy to support despite voters overwhelming anger over the economy. Harry Reid (D) has beat Sharron Angle by a fairly large margin.
12:40 am – It appears while Angle is just too crazy to win Allen West (R) is apparently not. He won FL-22 beating Ron Klein.
12:42 am – Jerry Brown (D) gets to be governor of California once more.
12:54 am -In AL-02 Bobby Bright (D) falls. Martha Roby has been declared the winner.
12:59 am – Another pick up for the GOP in WA-03. Jaime Herrera (R) wins.
1:00 am – Polls now closed in Alaska. All polls are now closed.
1:02 am – Another seat narrowly lost. In SD-AL Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D) lose to Kristi Noem.
1:05 am – Being a Democrat bucking your party in the House it doesn’t seem to save you.
1:10 am – In WA Sen it looks like Patty Murray (D) might hold on. With 61% reporting it is Murray 50.6 – Dino Rossi 49.4.
1:25 am – The Yes on Prop 19 campaign concedes defeat.

The next two years in Congress will be a big waste.
Worth repeating. Tonight’s outcome was determined in 2006 when Nancy Pelosi took impeachment “off the table.”
I saw that Brown and Boxer are in.
Results for Prop 19?
Never mind.
i’m going to lay down. might fall asleep. if not i’ll check on you guys later
9 News (Denver) predicts that Amendment 62 will fail. This was the “personhood for zygotes” amendment.
Hey! Somebody took off their socks in Nevada so that they could count!
NV SEN [10.5%] Reid 53, Angle 43
Looking bad for Sestak. A toomey lead that had been stuck at 30,000 votes just jumped to 45,000 with only 4% of precincts left to report in.
Ouch!
PA SEN [96.1%] Sestak 48.2, Toomey 51.8
IL SEN [90.9%] Giannoulias 46.4, Kirk 48
With the state of this country, I’m not sure if that’s a joke or not…
No joke. Second time around for this amendment. Life begins at conception, so many forms of birth control are murder, etc. We have our share of loonies.
Faux News officially projects Prop 19 will fail:
http://www.fox40.com/news/capitolpulse/ktxl-fox-news-projects-prop-19-to-f-110210,0,5385429.story
Boner’s on. He looks pretty awful. He isn’t even speaker yet and he’s aged.
So, just how drunk is he?
PA SEN 98% Sestak 49.2, Toomey 50.8
I have never seen late swings like this in PA.
I’m calling it now: Boehner’s going to resign amid scandal.
PA SEN [98.3%] Sestak 49.3, Toomey 50.7
IL SEN [93.1%] Giannoulias 46.1, Kirk 48.4
The late votes left to be counted are NOT in Red central PA, but in Philly and philly suburban counties.
AP just called it for Toomey.
The only remaining precincts are from Philly, and Joe’s home county, Delaware County. Hope – but slim hope.
Diary over on dKos – Feingold not conceding.
AP shows [69.7%] with Feingold down 57,000.
Walz survives in Minnesota
Looks like Boxer survived.
Toomey only up 61,000 votes with 98.8% reporting.
Fuck!
Why do I have the suspicion impeachment will be back on the table soon? Polls indicate large numbers of Republicans believe President Obama is in this country illegally, or else is the Anti-Christ.
Hey, life begins at conception has now become the MODERATE position. The real pro-life position is that life begins at ovulation and ejaculation. Why do you think masturbation is a “sin,” but that it is destroying human life?
What’s a stained dress next to a muslim socialist suspiciously dark-skinned guy who talks down to real Amurica?
Ca Secy of State site as of 8:30p – Prop 19 down with 10% of the vote counted, 45.1% to 54.9%.
“…please try again next week when nobody cares anymore …”
Ohio AG Cordray has lost re election bid
the Banksters get to make deals with Mike DeWine come January
My guess is that there will be lots of investigations into such issues. It’s probably the best we can hope for – Obama and the GOP are too busy playing politics to do anything serious.
LA Times said that only the Bay Area “tilted toward” yea on Prop 19.
As of 11:22 PM EST, HuffPo Live Blog is predicting Scott Brown will be next gov of CA. I have a screenshot.
I had to overcome Jello Biafra’s voice in my head to cast a vote for Jerry Brown.
Exit polls say Hanabusa will upset D’jou by 5-8 points…! Polls are closed here, but, no results yet…! That will be a House pickup for the Dems…! ;-)
Assassinator-in-Chief Obama probably should be impeached, just not for the things the Republicans would go for.
What a night. Got to hand it to the Professional Dems – it’s not easy to make yourselves so unpopular in the span of two years that you get wiped out by a bunch of idiot teabaggers whose party just ran the country into the ground.
Well, Obama can be as bipartisan as he wants now. From his actions so far, that appears to be all he really wanted anyway. It certainly wasn’t his intention to move any particular agenda forward, or he wouldn’t have hired Wall Street to reform Wall Street, or negotiated with the health insurance industry on how they would like to reform the health insurance industry.
YEPPERS
great news!
Prop 19 might fail but still bring out a significant number of young people and others who also vote Democratic. It will be interesting to see how California’s youth vote compares to the rest of the nation. I heard someone from Pew talking this afternoon on NPR, and IIRC he said youth (18-29 year-olds) would account for only 9% of the vote nationwide this year (according to their most current exit polls), which was down from 18% in 2008 and 12% in 2006.
The fact the youth vote with be down significantly from 2006 – another midterm election – shows what a failure Tim Kaine has been in organizing and how uninspiring Obama has been as president.
IL called for Kirk
CO SEN [42.7%] Bennet 47.6, Buck 47.1
Well, we’ll finally start to dismantle that pesky Social Security. And who needs Medicare now that we have super-awesome private health insurance exchanges.
Yeppers!
Well, this is shaping up to be almost exactly like the polls indicated, and that ain’t good. No democracy has pulled back from stage 3 fascism.
I’m heading for bed. G’nite peeps.
Well now OilyBomber can now go full throttle right wing. Lights out people. This empire is done.
CA will be able to pass Healthcare for all and a 50% majority on the budget! Yea! Think local focus. The beltway was sold to the Corporate powers and the banksters. Check your accounts as charges will go up as mine did I found out today…the BofA guys says well we are not getting all those other fees anymore (securitization of mortgages) so unbelievable their denial they drove the global economy into ruin for a decade.
Move I will… We better do SB810 again, it didn’t come up for a vote this year, it will next year, we better pass it and Brown better sign it. Then I don’t give a hoot about what the Fed does. We can do this ourselves, we are the 8th richest STATE that is not a country in the WORLD. We can do this OURSELVES. We can DO THIS OURSELVES. Jane come back home we need you to help, we can DO THIS OURSELVES.
I love Jerry Brown! Of course I’m remembering him from when he was governor before. Best. governor. ever. He was fun! He was curious! He had hair! He wasn’t Reagan!
Also, best governor’s portrait ever: link
Just saying. Buffalo Springfield reunites, and Jerry Brown’s gonna be governor. I am grinning.
I’ve seen apologists argue that hiring the scofflaws to run the economy was a good idea because the people who made the mess should clean it up.
By that reckoning we should let criminals run the police department, so they can clean up after their own messes.
But Brown is now pro-austerity, hence a corporate tool. But then, he probably always was.
the Main Stream Media seems to be in la la land
When 47% of democrats hate their president, this makes it possible for GOPer to win
what is hurting OBama right now is the fact, that a large part of his party thinks he is a republican! some know he is a republican.
Obama moving to right will end his political career in 2012 quickly!
the main stream media only needed 15 minutes to tell the american people what happen tonight.
Fox is calling Nevada for Reid. I know, that really cheers everyone up!
Eerie parallels for sure. And no more steroids.
When Darrell Issa starts umpteen investigations of the White House, will anyone care enough to take Obama’s side?
Brown should offer a fairly obvious contrast to the sad ridiculousness of Arnold. He could do a lot of good things, provided some rich guys don’t give him the Grey Davis treatment.
Barney Bankster won. When will that fossil retire.
Ha! I got through. But not good news:
Its one of those “well, at least the Nevadans aren’t QUITE as crazy as I thought” things…
FOX anchor called it for Reid.
The one weird swing I saw was in Berks county (encompasses the city of Reading). With 35% of precincts reporting, Berks was 55-45 Sestak. About 15 minutes later, with 70% in, it was 55-45 Toomey. The breakdown remained the same until 100% was in.
The suburban Philadelphia counties didn’t change too much once they had about 10-15% reporting, but Berks did a 20% swing.
No he wasn’t.
Damn that sucks. The US public is a bunch of morons. Just like George Carlin says: “Garbage in, garbage out…”
RLY? That would be great!
Yet local media is showing 51% Reid, 45% for Angle, with only 30% of precincts reporting…
NBC is calling it for Reid, also.
Here’s the CA Ballot Props page:
It’s Ugly.
CA folks could not approve $18 for vehicle fee hike to keep our parks opem.
CA folks failed to see the insanity behind 20, redistricting. Stupid.
Failed to see the need for 27, redistricting. Stooopider.
They DID vote to make it a majority vote and not 2/3 to pass a budget, but FAILED to pass a majority instead of 2/3 deal regarding state fees and taxes.
We DID manage to cream 23, Texas Oil scam.
To me, nation wide AND in CA, people are pissed about the economy and jobs, and voted NOT to raise taxes or increase spending . . . . and in CA some of that was just stoopid as shit . . . . but we’re spared Meg N Carly . . . .
CA will rock the boat for two years, but federally wise, we’re on our own for services and jobs development . . . things are gonna get brutal services wise, even Brown is gonna cut, cut, cut . . . . . sigh.
Yeah, he talked some shit about pension reform for public employees or some such shit. He’ll do the austerity dance like a good Demo trust me.
Free Speech TV is doing a great job on covering the REAL issues the corporate stations aren’t touching right now! john harkinson of mother jones is taking on the Republican strategy and Obama’s Administration changes: http://www.livestream.com/freespeechtv/video?clipId=flv_ea3f1569-1eb5-4cfc-8e0f-86593a2595b0
I read that Alexi Giannoulias was running ads with both him and Obama, touting Obama’s support. Can’t he read a damn poll? This is Obama’s approval rating in Illinois:
• 44 approve/49 disapprove
Obama’s approval ratings have plummeted in blue states where he won overwhelmingly in 2008.
Bahaha. Happen to be listening to KO as NBC [and thus he] are announcing the Harry Reid win. He then described the Senate as “49 real Democrats, Bernie Sanders who caucuses with the Democrats and Joe Lieberman” — then KO uttered a loud, snorting, derisive laugh.
In Iowa all 3 Supreme Court Justices on the ballot have failed to retain their seats on the bench. 50% approval is required for retention. This is the first time this has ever occurred. It is a result of the Court’s unanimous decision to legalize same sex marriages.
http://blogs.desmoinesregister.com/dmr/index.php/2010/11/02/justices-trailing-in-retention-vote-results-show/
And being pro austerity doesn’t make you a corporate tool. I’d like to think it means getting real and getting us unhooked from fantasy casino. The way I see it, Wall St. fantasy accounting sucks all the money away from real wealthmaking, like Main St. jobs. People actually are assets if you invest in them. The banks keeps investing in fakery, which fails and we have to prop ‘em up. Maybe austerity is code for real. (Don’t mess my grinning!)
Well how about that! Amazing to feel relieved at a Reid win, but Angle is so wacko that even his studied ineffectualness is preferable.
As bad as Reid is, Schumer would be worse:
We could sell the Hollywood sign. It might look good in Abu Dhabi.
Agreed. That and the Civil War amongst GOP factions in House are gonna be some solace as we the people see services and jobs diminished more and more and civil rights for all are reduced while military budgets and expenses will go up.
This shit’s gonna put HUGE pressure on Obama to do Iran.
And it’s still suicidal to do so, or even think so . . . but the pressure is gonna ratchet up HARD as the economy tanks further.
Hugh, I’m suggesting yer right about ’11 tanking the country hard as commercial real estate bubble pops and home foreclosure continues full speed ahead and unabated.
People are gonna be REAL pissed off about July . . . . and the masses are being played against one another . . . . violence will escalate against minorities quickly, fed by the increase in loonyism.
SIgh.
What a time to swear off The Merlot . . . a weight issue. I may have to reconsider and increase physical efforts to two a day’s . . .
Sigh . . . . .
When Darrell Issa starts umpteen investigations of the White House, will anyone care enough to take Obama’s side?
Obama didn’t take our side. His chief of staff called us “(expletive) retards” and his press spokesflack said we ought to be drug-tested.
Wasn’t even Michael Moore saying that shit when the deregulation crew were hired?
I’d love to hear from the Daily Kos “Give him more TIME” brigade right about now explaining their 73-dimensional chess.
I voted for 20 and against 27. 20 puts redistricting in the hands of a citizen panel, 5 Rs, 5 Ds, and 4 Is, and takes it out of elected hands, which means they can’t redistsrict themselves to safe seats and no debate and gridlock. 27 would have mandated electeds redistricting, which we have seen is a fail. So I don’t thing that’s stupid, I think that’s fine. Course we’ll have to see how the citizen panel does, but it’s hard to do worse. If it is, vote again.
The American people are such stupid, cowardly sheep–sheeple, not people.
How can the morons say they are free when they support fascist drug laws? Oh, that’s right. Because they’re morons.
In other words: No.
Why does Boehner cry so much?
Yep, CA is headed for cuts in all services like never before.
From roads to education and healthcare and entitlements and more . . .
Gonna get ugly if Brown can’t generate a HUGE jobs development program.
CA don’t have the budget to DO stimulus, and the Obama is NOT going to help us.
Brutal times ahead for all of us . . . CA has a plus in it’s size and such, but we’re still held captive by fed funding . . . . I see no miracles ahead.
Yeah, I don’t think the Yemen appetizer will keep the war machiners sated.
And CRE is just an eeeenormous pile of suck right now. Way under-reported and under-appreciated.
Now that we don’t need 60 votes anymore, I’m sure this will all be sorted out.
Yeah.
Presumably, Obama’s approval rating is higher among likely Giannoulis (sp?) supporters. 44% wouldn’t scare me, I think, if that mostly represented what the other side thought of him. Those folks won’t vote for progressives anyway.
One thing we could do is repeal Prop 13.
Brown’s gonna be a victim of the economy as much if not more than the rest of the country.
He can’t spend us out of trouble and he’ll HAVE make huge cuts. It’s a no win for him and CA at this point unless China invests in us and helps create a million jobs in a year.
Yeah. That’s my point, no pony’s with horns on their heads for USA, for CA.
Sigh.
Well, Brown says “No new taxes without voter approval.” I take it that means it’s on the table with everything else. Fine, let him make the case.
Sucks. Maybe doubly so since I’m moving back there fairly soon. ;-)
That would be exactly wrong, I think. Austerity plays into the hands of the well-off, assuming that it only applies to the rest of us. That’s how it’s working out both here and in Europe. The rich are the ones who can buy bonds at the higher rates that austere countries are having to sell them. They are the ones who benefit from lower labor costs and high unemployment.
Who pays for balancing budgets when the rich don’t have to pay more taxes? We do. Assuming we can find jobs, of course.
That panel itself, and who appoints the members, is the key.
It will favor candidates in ways present gerrymanderking only dreams, all controlled by the people who APPOINT the panel, or control the decision as WHO will be appointed.
If you didn’t research that factor . . . well, you missed the point of why Calitics said NO on 20 and YES on 27, along with many state newspapers.
All the way to the bank, hoss, he’s cryin all the way.
Can we? Or does that require a state constitutional convention? Prop 13 is where the 2/3 thing came from that REALLY helped my parents in ’88 but alas, now . . . and for the last 20 years or more it’s been doom city for CA.
Well, like what do I know, I’m still grinning from Buffalo Springfield, BUT…
Jerry Brown isn’t stupid. Jerry Brown doesn’t like to fail. There is one solvent state in the union, and it’s North Dakota, and that’s because North Dakota has its own bank and invests in itself and is mandated to serve the people of North Dakota — not Wall Street, not Delaware, not China (see here). Now California is full of workers and creators and airheads and wonderful people, even wealthy people. If we all work together, I can imagine we can create wealth. And if we invest it in ourselves instead of Wall Street, Delaware and China… well, see that’s one thing I can think of. Who knows what Jerry can think of? Governor Moonbeam! I grin, I beam.
Sadly it will now take 2/3 majority vote to pass any new taxes on corporations or anyone else. No new taxes, no new jobs, no revenue for the state.
Only cuts are coming.
Right now in a lead-lined bunker room deep below the White House, Important People are deciding that the most effective way to get the government running again is for Obama to announce tomorrow morning that he’s just switching to the GOP.
Triangulation 2.0, the Third Way TNG. Or something.
Yah, I don’t know if it’s better here in CA or elsewhere . . . one count on no economy, no jobs and no stimulus whether it be nation wide or state by state . . other states are gonna be devastated beyond belief as the economy tanks . .
And as has been often and duly noted, Red States will suffer more and take MORE federal help than blue states barely holding their own.
Welcome back , though . . . what part of the state you headed to?
Bonds, securities, dollars — dude, it’s all toxic waste. It came from fraud, it goes to fraud, it collapses. Let em have it. Laugh at it. Jerry’s going to have to think different. I am making this all up of course. So will he have to. I just have more faith in his imagination and mankindedness than Meg’s.
Well Madison said there are no angels in government. Just saying, electeds redistricting themselves has failed. So try something else.
Huh, edit don’t work anymore, sez expired IMMEDIATELY after posting comment.
THIS: one count on no economy, no jobs and no stimulus whether it be nation wide or state by state . . shoulda said THIS:
. . . one “can” count on no economy, no jobs and no stimulus whether it be nation wide or state by state . .
Yeah, and ‘be careful what you wish for” comes to mind if ya don’t have the little details.
*G*
Good luck to yas any way it all comes down on us . . . .
(D) HANABUSA, Colleen 24,081 51.1%
(R) DJOU, Charles 20,522 43.5%
No full precincts reporting…
44% is approval, 49% is disapproval. That means Giannoulias associated himself with a guy (Obama) that more people disliked than liked. Obama alienates more voters – in Illinois – than he brings on board to vote for Giannoulias.
That’s been the crux of the problem for Democrats. Since more voters disapprove of Obama than approve of him, it’s hard to run and win unless the candidate either distances themself from Obama or outright criticizes him.
My favorite paragraph from Meg Whitman campaign lit, Get the Facts, p. 15:
God I love that! Grinning, beaming and cheering.
Babylon, but still uncertain.
If he does that, how will we tell the difference?
It would at least require a special election, but when they release thousands of convicts and garbage starts piling up maybe people will be more receptive. Who knows? Prop 13 did keep us from becoming New Jersey property tax wise but it’s killed the state in so many ways. What we need is an end to fucking bond floats to pay for everything. Stop locking people up for every bullshit charge.
Stop investing in Wall St. fraud
