There is no better sign of just how deeply unpopular the Obama administration is in West Virginia than the newest ad from Democratic Gov. Joe Manchin. Manchin makes taking on some of the tent poles of this administration central to the ad, and uses the language of the right to do so: repealing the “bad parts” of “Obamacare,” and keeping the federal government “off our backs.” He quite literally takes a shot at “Cap and Trade” legislation.
Keep in mind, this is the ad from the Democrat running for Senate. I wonder if his Republican challenger, John Raese, plans to actually hit the stimulus with a nuclear bomb in his next ad.
One problem I have with the Manchin ad is that the West Virginia governor claims to be a sportsman, but chooses to shoot cap and trade. I personally think going after prey that has already been dead for a long time isn’t very sporting.

I have to admit, that’s a kickass ad. The candidate shooting a piece of legislation, good stuff. In retrospect, its a wonder no campaign has taken this tack before (that I’m aware of).
Maybe Hal Riney should have cast the armed man who confronts the bear with Ronald Reagan himself. :o)

Well, that’s one more Democrat who doesn’t deserve anyone’s vote.
1. Using imagery of killing/shooting against an idea is a signal that political discourse is ineffective; so taking up arms is the remedy. How is this different from Sharron Angle saying we need to invoke our Second Amendment remedies against Democrats?
2. Manchin is shooting at a piece of paper, but his position on protecting coal interests is hurting the health/safety of WV citizens and damaging the state’s environment, never mind the global consequences.
3. The next generation will play this video as a symbol of the irresponsible mindlessness and anti-science ignorance/greed of our generation.
Manchin’s ad is tremendously ignorant and foolhardy. Tacking hard right is not the way to beat a Rethug. It is way too easy for his Rethug challenger to run farther to the right. And the challenger can say this:
My opponent neglects to Manchin (Mansion) that he is a member of the Obama Party that brung ya’ll this bullsheeeit.
He don’t make no sense. Why’s he fightin’ his own party?
BTW, Cap and Trade is already dead. Why’s Manchin shootin’ a dead bill? Does he think West Virginian’s are as stupid as he is?
Do these people EVER make the connection to their gasping last breaths and the smog they hoist upon us? Probably not. EPA needs to be sued for doing too little, not too much, but please don’t tell them I said so, because I want their $$$! If I were a “normal” person in WV I’d have to ask, “Why bother?” Like we need ANOTHER Ben Nelson.
If Manchin don’t believe in his own Party, why don’t he queeit? Charlie Crist (The gubner of Flahdah) did.
I could’ve made that shot with iron sights… What a wuss.
backed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce thankyewverymuch
So how much worse could Raese be?
Nah, I actually heard Raese on a radio interview with that Levin character the other day, and he’s MUCH worse. He’s a complete Tea Bagger and committed right-wing ideologue.
We may not like it but the only way for anyone to win in WV this year is to be on the opposite side from whatever the President and his administration have proposed. This is the result of a complete disregard for what voters seem to want.
how long before obama gets outside his bubble and realizes it’s him?
and then, how long before he realizes it’s his corporate agenda that got him where he is today?
I am really hoping the dems have the nerve to mount a real primary against this guy
100 yards, .308, dead center? My experience with iron sights would have a 5 shot group about the size of a silver dollar. One shot dead center?
I wonder how many shots it took?
Remember when they were going to “run on” Obamacare? They were going to pass the bill, and then by the time all its wonderful features were implemented, public opinion would skyrocket?
Not seeing that yet, right? I’m sure when the fines start rolling out in 2014 things will be much better.
It took one shot point blank with a pencil to poke a hole in the paper. Two shots with the camera, one on “Showboat Joe” and another on the target.
well, he would have been right if he didn’t write a corporate bill, laden with corporate gifts and back door deals, minus the public option or a medicare buy in
he thought, since the public wanted a real health care bill that gave him cart blanch to write any bill he could, even though it would be corporate sponsored
he actually did not think we would know the difference between a corporate bill and a people bill
man, he underestimated his constituents more then we over estimated his political skillz
I have never hunted with a scope always with iron sights just the way the army taught me, oh thats right I could shoot very accurately long before the army…
I saw Manchin on Chris Matthews the other night. After hearing what he didn’t like about Obama, but then how he *loves* Obama’s education program (it was “great”, he opined), I figured he and I really weren’t in the same party.
StewartM
probably quite a few.
Nice and hicky and some good shootin’ too YEEEEHAAAAAAA! I wonder if this says more about Manchin or about the voters of W Virginia? If this is what it takes for a Dem to be elected in WVA, the state’s just about gone.
Fixed it for ya’.
WVA’s hatred of BHO began way before the election.
This guy is not different than Obama running in 2008. Obama ran away from Democrats and portrayed himself as somehow above it all. He knew that if he promoted himself as in the middle of Democratic ambitions, he wouldn’t get elected. He was “post-partisan.”
So, Manchin is taking a page out of Obama’s book.
Except in a few areas, Dems cannot run as Dems. Only a small percentage of the population wants them.
The guy is nothing but a Dino, opportunistic, self-promoting little piss-ant.
Nice. If he actually had the power to do any of things he promises to do, I’d be worried. Apparently he hasn’t heard about the filibuster.
