Throughout this cycle, SurveyUSA’s polling in California has been slightly less favorable for Democrats, but the most recent poll for CBS 5 shows clear movement in favor of Gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown and incumbent Sen. Barbara Boxer. Both Democrats now lead in their respective races:
SurveyUSA (9/19-21)
Governor
Meg Whitman (R) 43
Jerry Brown (D) 46
Other 8
Undecided 3
Senate
Carly Fiorina (R) 43
Barbara Boxer (D) 49
other 6
Undecided 2
The previous SurveyUSA poll of California from three weeks ago found Whitman leading Brown 47-40 and Fiorina beating Boxer 48-46, so this is clearly serious movement.
While polling from earlier this year shows Boxer in potential trouble, most recent polling has her with a small but clear lead. The race is breaking down along very partisan lines, and with Democrats having such a large edge in California registrations, Boxer has a solid base to draw on.
Governor
The race for governor remains tighter. Only three points separate Brown and Whitman in this SurveyUSA poll, and a recent Field poll has the two candidates tied:
Field Poll (9/14-21)
Jerry Brown (D) 41
Meg Whitman (R) 41
Undecided/Other 18
Since March, all of Field’s polls have shown the race effectively tied with very little movement, which is remarkable given that Whitman has run the most expensive self-funded campaign in history.

Since I’m not a total idiot yet, I understand the real-world differences between Boxer and Fiorina. They’re really not even close on issues of major importance to a functioning democracy.
But, as I just wondered about in another article, why was Barbara Boxer a part of the bill of attainder against ACORN? Why did Boxer feel the need to cater to the conservative right as her initial postion on this? What was so liberal about that?
Jerry Brown’s new TV ads sound like they come straight from Republican talking points. Boxer and Feinstein are against cannabis legalization because?
So, just in the small chance some Democratic operative might be snooping around the lake of fire, WTF?
I can understand this nonsense elsewhere but given how Democratic Cali is I can win by just fully locking up the Democratic vote.
Did Harry Reid called Boxer hot?
This may be the only good political news I heard today.
Next question any numbers on who is spending how much in these races?
Debates who is avoiding them? Who will only debate if the questions or topics are known in advance any Dem who agrees to debate under those terms is a moron in my book.
She hates Black People? I second the question!
Are drug, booze and tobacco funding them?
Because establishment Democrats are Scyphozoa.
Now comeon Jon, They take the lead? 120 million spent and no success, since when? I’m voting for Mr. Brown but ZERO chance of betting the money.
Aw, c’mon, be fair. Jellyfish suck less than leeches.
Boxer also helped campaign for Joe-frakking-Lieberman of all people. Add to that her opposition to Prop 19, plus the other things NorCalNative points out, that’s enough to turn me to voting against her.
Is Fiorina terrible? Of course she is. But ask yourself: would Joe be in office today, obstructing good governance in the Senate, if it weren’t for people like Babs? Imagine how much good she could have done, had she campaigned with Ned Lamont instead? And how much longer are we going to tolerate this irrational War on (Some) Drugs? We gotta clear this deadwood out of our government, before these ninnies destroy our democracy. And if not now, when?
I assume you are referring to Boxer’s position on this?
“Sen. Mike Johanns, R-NE. introduced an amendment Thursday, this time to cut off any funding ACORN may receive from the Department of the Interior. The measure passed 85-11 and received a “yea” vote from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-CA. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-CA, accused Republicans of orchestrating a political stunt. She said ACORN does not receive Interior Department funds and the introduction of the amendment was “unnecessary.”
She voted for something that had no effect…it took no money from ACORN and was unlikely to prevent such funding. Furthermore it’s doubtful that the Amendment, as phrased, was a Bill of Attainder, since it referred to a “class” of contractors that would be disqualified in the FUTURE. As some have pointed out, a precise reading of the Amendment would also have disqualified many Iraq and Afghanistan military contractors from receiving funding.
Yeah…let’s elect a person to the Senate that supports privitizing social security, defunding public education (and supports a policy of Trade-School Higher Education), etc.
This whole political class is tired elderly girls on the pole, every fuckin one of em. In some tired crap joint.
So glad Obama used his wave of hope & euphoria to set such a fresh tone.
Oh well, as the buddhists say, when hope is gone there is freedom.
LMAO! Very true. And both are soft, squishy and spineless.
but look at her HAIR…..yuk yuk
when hope is gone there is freedom.
me likey
Or maybe the large cannabis producers- who are almost wholeheartedly OPPOSED to Prop. 19? I think both Brown and Boxer are on the wrong side of this issue…and Brown, in particular, could say that he would support the “will of the people” on the issue. Boxer’s position is largely irrelevant to a State issue (unless one really believes that Federal pre-emption applies).
As Kris Kristofferson said, (through Janice Joplin), freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose. I’m about to be one of the free-est persons in the country. woohoo!
That’s not Barbara Boxer’s picture, well maybe it’s her picture, but it’s not a picture OF her, at least not in this century.
Brown looks old & tired, has hidden away from the voters until recently and his ads contain almost nothing by Republican talking points. Many in CA are complaining that he’s not really saying much of anything, nor really providing any insight to his plans or goals or ideas for how he will run the state as Gov. My feeling is that Brown’s been largely ineffective – the usual Democratic way. A big meh.
That said, Whitman would be a horror show, but it makes me laugh that she’s poured something like $110mill into the campaign. Brown does make some “hay” out of pointing out her fiscal profligacy, which is a good point. Brown did challenge E-Meg to debate him this summer, but she refused bc she’s horrid at debating. They are debating on Sept 28; my bet is that E-Meg runs away and doesn’t do any more debates.
Boxer had her day, but she’s tacked rightward as well. She would do better to stfu about Prop 19, if she’s not going to support it but too late now. I may not vote in this race due to Boxer fatigue and disgust. I simply canNOT vote for the execrable Fiorina, who ran HP into the ground, off-shored over 3000 US jobs and holds up Communist China with their use of slavery to run their country as some sort of “example” of what the Oligarchs and serfs in the USA should use a model. UGH. Ptoui!
Lousy choices, all of ‘em, frankly.
Carly Fiorina is a horror show. No one’s been luckier in opponents than Barbara Boxer.
Oh I dunno … there’s that guy in Delaware.
My thought is that Fiorina is a one termer. I intend to vote for her just to get rid of Boxer. Once Boxer is gone, we can get a real Democrat in the Senate.
This anti Boxer stuff is insane. You all want to kick her out because she isn’t the perfect Democrat, but if even she isn’t acceptable then the Senate is going to be a lonely place for Democrats if you have your way. And to the person who said they probably won’t vote in the race due to Boxer fatigue, she ain’t going anywhere. She’s the only Democrat in California who knows how to win a state-wide race.
And just to burnish my Not Establishment credentials, I voted for Cynthia McKinney rather than Obama in ’08. To talk about Boxer like Obama, sheesh.
Are you confusing your CA senators? Maybe you mean Feinstein? If so she’s not up again until 12.
OMFG!!!
Carly Two Yachts is rabidly anti-choice. Just this week she attended a fund raiser for herself and guess who were two of the hosts??? The top polluters in the US, the Koch brothers.
Time to get over the fatigue. Six years is A long time to have Fiorina near a button that allows her to vote on anything
