“I was with the LAPD when Nixon declared the ‘war on drugs’ over 40 years ago and was one of the ‘generals’ on the front lines who helped implement that same failed drug policy that is still in effect today,” said Stephen Downing, a retired LAPD deputy chief of police.
“By keeping marijuana illegal, we aren’t preventing anyone from using it,” he continued. “The only results are billions of tax-free dollars being funneled into the pockets of bloodthirsty drug cartels and gangs who control the illegal market.”
Stephen Downing, the former deputy chief of police for LAPD, spoke in favor of Proposition 19 on MSNBC on Monday, comparing the end of alcohol prohibition and the decline of organized crime to what will happen to the drug cartels if Prop 19 passes. Said Downing of legalization: “Proposition 19 is smart law enforcement, period.”
Downings’ opponent, former small-town police chief Richard Weinblatt, had no argument but to say that marijuana legalization is a “slippery slope” to legalizing all drugs, which is just flat-out ridiculous and hardly a convincing argument to vote against shutting down Mexico’s drug cartels, helping law enforcement, and stopping the incarceration of millions of people every year.
The media agrees: this week’s roll-out of law enforcement for legalization got the attention of NY Times, LA Times, AP, and hundreds of local papers. Check out LEAPs roundup of the coverage.

Everybody supports marijuana legalization except those that make money off it being illegal and those that the former have deluded. Period.

This is crap, this is why America’s fighting men are dieing in afghanstan. We fight in fields of pot that are taller than our heads, some may say oh wow heaven, I say not so much. This pot (and poopy for opium) gets farmed by afghans a lot becuase they make almost 2500-3000 afghan for 1 kilo of it where as wheat is only 35-40 per kilo. The TB buy it sell it for more and then use the money to kill American soldiers here in afghanstan. So go ahead vote to legalize it just realize your signing American death warrants so you can sit on your couch smoke it up and each toke is a bullet/IED/rpg into an American who is fighting so you can have the right to kill him by providing money to the TB. Thanks for that.
Has it never occurred to you that it’s so profitable BECAUSE it’s illegal? That same argument was made by the people who supported alcohol prohibition and surprise! The crime rate went way down when it was repealed. Pot is far easier to grow here than in Afghanistan because here is where the plant evolved. If it was legal here, there would be no reason for the Afghans to grow it because it would cost too much to export. As for poppies, where do you see anybody advocating legalizing opiates anywhere in this thread?
Uh, this is the electrocution-by-police-in-good-measure-is-OK apologist “Dr. Richard B. Weinblatt” who gleefully got TASER(TM)-ered in the back [what-- not the chest?!] over in super GOPer/Virginia Foxx/XE headquarters/peek-in-your-medicine-cabinet North Carolina in this video. It would appear that his media appearances are designed as a firewall to quell the public and keep TASER International from being run out of business on a rail. Weinblatt says he has “no financial interest in Taser International” (the strikeouts in the following are mine for meaning and emphasis):
That’s unadulterated bullshit. BULLSHIT.
Seachange!! Seachange!! I am hugely excited and pleased – fair play may win out after all. I consider cannabis prohibition to the the keystone issue which supports a horrible collection of corrupt sociopathic corporate entities (prisons for profit, for one) that just don’t care that they deal in human misery.
You have it completely backwards. If we can grow our own cannabis, there will be no need to smuggle in anything from anybody. No drug smuggling. No money laundering. No crime.
Yes, the “War on ____” (today’s fill-in the blank word is “Drugs”) brings a whole new meaning to “No Fear, No Hate, No Pain (No Broken Hearts)” (hattip The Eurythmics).
