In addition to finding very positive numbers for Proposition 19, PPP also recently polled the Senate and Governor contests in California. In both races, the Democrat had a single-digit but statistically significant lead over the Republican challengers. All candidates had less popularity than the measure to legalize and regulate marijuana.
Governor

Jerry Brown D 46
Meg Whitman R 40
Undecided 14
Senate
PPP (PDF) (7/23-25)
Barbara Boxer D 49
Carly Fiorina R 40
Undecided 11
These are some of the best numbers in a while for Democrats in the state. A SurveyUSA poll from earlier this month had the Republicans with small leads in the two races, and a Field poll had the Democrats winning by a slimmer margin.
The other good news for Democrats from the poll is that both top Republicans currently have very negative favorability numbers. Fiorina is at 28 percent favorable, with unfavorable at 40 percent. Whitman is at 30 percent favorable, with 50 percent unfavorable. Turning around unfavorable numbers is not an easy task. It looks like Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s incredibly low job approval (approval 19 percent, disapproval 71 percent) could be playing a role in reducing enthusiasm in the state for voting for more Republicans.
This PPP poll of the Senate and Governor races also polled Prop. 19. According to the survey, more Californian voters, 52 percent, have so far decided to support legalizing marijuana than to support either the Democratic or Republican nominees for the top two political races. As the poll stands right now, both former (and possible future) Gov. Jerry Brown and Sen. Barbara Boxer are less popular than Proposition 19.

Well of course any politician is less popular than Pot. That’s a no brainer… /s
Brown is *finally* ramping up his campaign. Almost a day late and certainly a few dollars short. E-Meg is poised to eviscerate CA even more than Ahhhhnold (who will seem mild and almost “Democratic” by comparison should she win) and give away as much middle class tax dollars as possible to her many obscenely wealthy buddies as she can. Because, doncha know, only if all these tax cuts for the wealthy happen, can CA expect the obscenely wealthy to “create jobz” ‘n stuff.
BTW, whilst E-Meg will cut taxes for the wealthy, she also wants to increase prisons and prisoners by about 10-fold (number pulled outta my butt, but probably close)… which is an unfunded mandate that will be bourne by the middle and working classes (such as we exist anymore). Which means: teachers will be fired, schools closed, no assistance for the disabled and seniors (they should all get offa their lazy butts and get a job, fer gawd’s sake), and less police, but waaaaay more prison guards.
Did ya know that a prison guard’s starting salary in CA is around $70k per year, but a starting salary for a teacher is $40k per year???
E-Meg will rant about the perfidy of all Unions (to the delight of Republicans who love to viticmize themselves to the dreaded unions), but E-Meg will gladly accept that big campaign donation from the prison guards unions. Of course! Naturally. No hypocrisy with that.
Gosh! It all makes sense to me now… /s
Which makes their refusal to endorse even more stupid and cowardly. How many people need to support it before it becomes a safe, mainstream position. Only if they get the ok from a DC Villager.
Supporting Prop19 will not hurt any Dem in Calif. They are all cowards.
Here is a link to a great short cartoon video that explains prohibition in the simplest format and terms. I highly rec.

It’s high time folks put their money where their values are and remove it from what they say isn’t in alignment with their values and does not benefit them inthe short- or long-term. So, if you want peace, you must do things like fund education (what we have right now is a prison system socialization and on-ramping program instead) and educators (folks who teach logic, critical thinking skills and help others cultivate basic human goodness). If you want justice, you must honor basic human and civil liberties for everyone and have accountability. Otherwise, we’re only going to experience more of the same.
LOL!!! U R too funnie… /s
I agree, but let’s get real. Our coporate overlords certainly are not interested in peace or justice, which is why they prefer to accept donations from the prison guard unions while villifying the teacher unions.
Corporate propoganda has worked out well bc many Americans, including some Democratic voters, quite agree with these stands.
And frankly, most citizens these days have less than zero interest in peace… what a pussy liberal notion. If I speak to any citizen about War Inc, I speak only in financial terms. Citizens don’t care about peace at all (nor do they care much whether women and kids are killed), but they do care about the money being ripped out of their pockets.
As a practical response we can protest the incarceration of my minister.

Heh
I’d be willing to wager that it’s not the unpopularity of pols that these numbers convey, but instead that the hi-profile pot referendum is energizing the Dem base – thus the turnaround in the Senate and Gubernatorial races.
This could be the first election in history where, rather than coattails, the victors ride roaches into office :)
Ask not, Carly and Meg, for who(ka) the bell tolls. It tolls for thee…
BONG. BONG. BONG.
A no brainer.
Pot give value for one’s money. Politicians? Value for whose money?
Nir Rosen put it best and its just plain and simple -

It is interesting that the opponents of CA Prop. 19 call themselves “Public safety first”. And this is when it has been conclusively shown by experts that Cannabis use suppresses violent behavior (as opposed to alcohol), and that Cannabis can even be potentially useful in addiction treatment, that is in helping people stay off booze and dangerous hard drugs or prescription drugs. Mexican drug cartels also oppose Legalization because if Cannabis is legalized all their illegal distribution networks are no longer needed. Recent scientific Conference in LA also stressed that current situation is unacceptable and unsustainable, and that it is supported by “prison-industrial complex” in this country because those are the people who benefit financially from more prisons and more prisoners. The so-called “public safety first” campaign against Proposition 19 is simply not entitled to use this name for their lies and distortions, because if we talk about “public safety”, it is the supporters of Prop. 19 and not its opponents who really care about it. Public safety will be much better served if the Proposition passes, rather than if it fails!
