Trying to get people to stop consuming cannabis has been central to our nation’s “war on drugs” for decades. This war has cost the country billions, if not trillions, of dollars. Most important, it is an abject failure. Yet the policy has been in place for so long that it has simply become part of the status quo. It’s just accepted, part of the way things are.
That is, until California put an initiative on its November ballot to legalize, regulate and tax cannabis. Now the issue is getting real attention from politicians, news organizations and regular people. NPR today started its week-long series, “The New Marijuana.” Via NPR:
What happens in the Golden State this year could have a big impact on the rest of the country. If California decides to make all marijuana legal and starts reaping tax revenue, other states may be tempted to follow, as they have before.
But then, what will the federal government do? Pot remains an illegal drug under federal law. The Justice Department, under the Obama Administration, in most cases has no desire to go after medical marijuana. But it’s highly doubtful that recreational pot will get the same free pass from the feds.
The decision to devote a week to the issue of marijuana comes in the wake of a much-publicized AP story that analyzed the last 40 years of our war on drugs and found it to be a failure. CBSNews.com decided to create a special report series, “Marijuana Nation.” There has also been a host of new polling on the issue of legalization, not just in California but nationally and in several Western states.
The California ballot initiative has served as a catalyst, bringing the issue of our drug policies to the forefront and significantly increasing news coverage. This is our moment as a country to re-examine our failed marijuana prohibition and have an honest debate about it.

Onward through the fog!
Oat Willie </a? quote?
What ever happened to the slogan contest?
Actually it was the slogan for Powerhitters way back when.
Edit: and further checking shows Oat Willies was a maker of Powerhitters so guess we were both correct
Yeah, Oat Willie #1, page 14.
The curent budget crisis in most states is the perfect catalyst for reform. Even if the climate is not yet ripe for leglization and taxation it is certainly time to decriminalize and stop wasting so much money tracking down potheads.
Speaking of cannabis, it’s starting to seem like you’re never going to announce the campaign name winner. There are always going to be breaking stories. I hope you’ll get it started sooner than later…
Sorry for the poor edit – missed a by a keystroke.
this proposition is bull, it should be de-criminalized, not fully legalized. this is just an excuse for the greedy capitalist to take over. it will be a nightmare if passed. corporations will take over.
Greedy corporations have already take over. This is a way to fight back.
Federal marijuana prohibition is a fully unconstitutional religious prohibition based on Exodus 22:18 Thou shall not suffer a witch to live.
Here is a nice book on the issue as world history, I highly recommend it,

Marijuana is completely harmless and a very useful medicine. From FOXN,
Are You Cannabis Deficient?
http://health.blogs.foxnews.com/2010/03/10/are-...
That means the argument used to regulate it as interstate commerce is totally bogus. That is also why even though weed is completely harmless, it is scheduled all wrong, and they refuse to change it. Like including Native Americans in the religion section at Borders Books, it would rip a hole in their space/time/legal argument continuum, granting us equal rights, including the right to keep OUR property.
You see when it gets to American Indians, and our religions based on smoking things, the Doctrine of Discovery gives white men the right to take away everything we have.
How else do you think they have gotten away with drug war asset seizures that are completely unconstitutional? There is a legal precedent.
From our constitution,
Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,
OR PROHIBITING THE FREE EXERCISE THEREOF (smoking pot);
or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
From my church,
Cultivation and enjoyment of Cannabis sacrament is a fundamental human right provided by God and protected by the first Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. It is our opinion that Cannabis is the original sacrament of Hebrew, Muslim, Christian, Hindu, Shinto, Buddhist, Rasta and more, and fulfills the prophesies to ‘raise up for them a plant of renown…’

Our church was raided by the IRS. Compare that to the kid glove treatment the Catholic church gets for sheltering pedophiles and you can see where the DOJ’s priorities are.

Do you think the supreme court is going to rule against the first amendment freedom of religion? Because I don’t. I think I actually have freedom of religion.

Legalize pot, open up a new industry resulting in more jobs, treating addiction of drugs the same as alcholism, and drasticaly reduce prisons and court dockets. Gov saving money, us paying less in tax dollars to live in socialist prisons (snark), and getting addicts the medical care they need, we would have to have some really smart politicians working for us to get this job done. Know any?
Decriminalise dont legalise. Keep the dick heads away.
You are right, I misspoke.
Decriminalize marijuana!
I will never pay a tax on weed. Next they’ll want to tax mothers’ milk.
When it is legalized, it will be just like booze. You can make your own beer and wine just as you will be able to grow your own. Just like booze, you can make it but you cannot sell it. If you do not want to grow or cannot, then you can buy it from the liquor stores.
Oregon will have the OCTA on the ballot this November. That is the Oregon Cannabis Tax Act. We have already legalized the production of hemp, but are waiting for some action at the Federal level.
This country will be much better off when it is legal to have an attitude adjustment!
