The Senate matchup between Democrat Jack Conway and Republican Rand Paul is very close, with a slight advantage for Paul. A DailyKos/Research 2000 poll has Paul at 44 percent and Conway at 41 percent, with a four percent margin of error.
Looking at the internals, it seems Paul has suffered from his statements criticizing the Civil Rights Act.
Paul’s favorabilities are down among Independents — from 62-16 to 58-20, and among Democrats — from 37-45 to 29-57. Lucky for him, railing against the Civil Rights Act plays to his base. Among Republicans, Rand is now up to 79-9, from 76-10.
Paul lost more ground than he gained. This close race appears winnable for Democrats, if Conway can paint Paul as far outside the mainstream. In Kentucky, Democrats have one of their best hopes to win a Senate seat currently held by a Republican.

Here’s hoping the folks back home see Paul for what he is and vote for Conway. (And I’ll wager a lot of Grayson’s voters will pull the lever for Conway in November)
In this poll Rand Paul holds the exact lead over Conway he held in the last Daily Kos poll May 10-12. So the huge media feeding frenzy launched at him had zero impact.
I think DK has a problem polling conservative states though, since the last DK poll also polled the primary match up giving Paul only a 10 point lead over the more liberal Grayson, and Paul won by 23 points, the following week.
In the internals, it also says 57% say they’d be more likely to vote for someone who wants to repeal Obamacare than for someone who wants to ‘perfect’ it. Conway supported Obamacare, Rand Paul opposes it. I think issues like that are going to be the ones that actually determine the election.
However, time will tell.
Let Rand Paul make a few more remarks to the press, like how he would like to see helicopter gunships on the border and satellite surveillance of the same while supporting laws that clearly violate the Constitution that he so loves to embrace when it suits him. Kentucky voters may be conservative but Paul isn’t. He’s radical by definition.
OK he has a fair shot of winning the seat. Are we talking about a progressive liberal Democrat or are talking about a Blue Dog Democrat.
Daily Kos doesn’t poll anything. They use Research 2000 which is independent and polls the races they are commissioned to poll. Kos uses research 2000 because it had the best performance in the 2008 elections, federal, state and local. I’m not a fan of the Orange Satan but saying that Kos does any polling and polls to liberals’ advantage is a Bill O’Reilly and FAUX “News” attack point and like most of them, isn’t true.
Out of the two Democrats in that primary, Conway is by far the more progressive but that is such a relative term these days as to render it virtually meaningless.
verbene, you are talking about a neoliberal who will attack Rand Paul on war from the right, and likely the Patriot Act as well. One who decries Rand Paul’s statements against the RHETORIC of putting a bootheel on the throat of BP, but himself (Conway) takes campaign funds from BP. (99.4% of Rand Paul’s donations were from individuals per opensecrets) I doubt he wanted armed helicoptors, Margaret, however, most Americans want our laws enforced. While you may simply disagree with that principle, it doesn’t make him radical to be on the side of the majority. I was a bit creeped out by the spy satalite bit, though. I’m not sure he’s thought all of this through. I DO think he kind of speaks off the cuff.
Conway is probably not a “progressive liberal” but the reality is a progressive liberal probably can’t get elected in Kentucky.
I’d place him between Ben Chandler (a Blue Dog though not as bad as others) and John Yarmuth politically.
And I do think he’d vote more standard Dem than folks like Blanche and Short Ride
I really don’t care what kind of Dem Conway is. We must stop people like Paul from getting into positions of power. They are very dangerous and it pumps up the teaparty. Besides that, Ms. McConnell will stroke out if a Dem takes that seat. :)
Read it for yourself before you call me a liar and be sure to click through the links. I know libertarians have a hard time dealing with reality but give it a go, just this once,
Whoa! Hey, that was in response to verberne. I’m with you! :-)
Have to get in the shower and get on the road pups. Hope you all have a great weekend. I’ll check back in if I can but I have to visit my dad’s grave at the VA cemetery in Houstopolis. Later on. (maybe)
Thankfully, I am not a voter in Kentucky.
Paul gave an interview to a Russian television station expressing his support for the view of the National Alliance, Tom Tancredo and Russell Pearce from here in Arizona, in which “anchor babies” should be denied citizenship.
Now, the 14th Amendment speaks to citizenship, and thusly, all Rand’s angst and anger would be better directed to advocating for a new Amendment. However, he won’t do so since he is on a quest to reinforce this mindset for bigotry and racism. Consequently, Rand’s behavior is beneath contempt.
Now, how do I communicate this to the folks of Kentucky?
Jaango
LOL. I wasn’t yelling at you. I just wanted to say that I’m very concerned about people like Paul. Didn’t mean it to sound that forceful.
David Dayen has a fresh cross-post already in progress: Money for Wars, Not for the Poor
“We must all at once stop identifying ourselves as Democrats and Republicans. The elites use these definitions as part of a divide and conquer strategy. In any event, Bush and Obama seem pretty similar to me anyway. Two thugs. We must get back to our roots and what made this country great. The enemy is not someone from a different political party or a “capitalist” or a “socialist.” The enemy is collectivist thought imposed on humanity from the top down. Top down collectivist thought has taken on many forms whether it is Communism or Fascism but in the end what happens is a small ruling elite run the lives of 99% of the population. Those that resist are killed or imprisoned. I certainly do not think I have all the answers. What I do know is that freedom loving people the world over must shed their prior false political identities and together agree on certain key principles. There is a battle going on between a small highly organized group that wants a collectivist top down structure of world government and they are rushing to put these plans into action.”

Big Gummint sure does cause problems for the people of Louisiana.
Been kinda waitin for the Pauls to explain how if we all had been voting libertarian for a while BP wouldn’t have let this oil well pop or if it did the ooze wouldn’t hurt anything.
Checked some Paul sites, I guess they haven’t noticed anything amiss on the Gulf Coast.
The smear campaign against Rand Paul took off like a rocket,
And ‘poof’ … winked out at midnight.
There was no there there.
The MSLizards strike out again.
Rand Paul may be bit of an idiot, but I am deeply troubled by everyone leaping to support Conway. Really? Have we learned nothing from Obama? It doesn’t matter if you have a R or a D next to your name, odds are you’re a shill for big business and would be just as likely to go along with the powers that be as the next guy.
Rand Paul, while nutty, is “different”, God forbid. We need more “different” people up there. I’m tired of watching a handful of progressive Democrats get up give their little speech, sit down and get drowned in votes opposing their view, or hell vote for whatever they spoke out against.
Whatever.. it isn’t working and arbitrarily opposing Rand because he has a lot of views that appeal to those in his constituency means nothing. It just means that most of you wouldn’t be very welcome in Kentucky.
I’m sure that Conway isn’t perfect but he has one really big thing going for him – he isn’t Rand Paul. You might not feel uncomfortable having a nut case like Paul in the Congress but I do. There are times when you simply have to vote against someone.
