Tonight is a primary night with elections in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Arkansas and Oregon. The big races are the contested Senate primaries in KY, PA and AR, and the special election in PA-12 Congressional district to replace Democrat John Murtha. David Dayen has a primer on the races to watch this evening and so does Swing State Project. Ben Tribbett examines what you should be watching for in the Arkansas primary.
You can find part 1 of my election night coverage here and election results can be found at Politico
8:00 – Polls have just closed in Pennsylvania. In KY-3 Republican Todd Lally won the right to challenge Democratic incumbent John Yarmuth.
8:16 – So far to in Senate primaries Anti-Establishment 1 – Establishment 0.
8:23 – The Democratic Senate primary in KY is the last important race in the state not yet called. With 58% reporting it is Jack Conway 48% – Dan Mongiardo 40.
8:30 – Polls just closed in Arkansas!
8:35 – Turnout in KY has been extremely high. Interesting because reports are that turnout in PA was fairly low.
8:40 – We now got 1% of precincts reporting in PA and it is Arlen Specter 65 – Joe Sestak 36 so far
8:54 – With 76% of precincts reporting in KY Conway 46.5 – Mongiardo 41. The places not reporting so far favor Mongiardo for the most part but it is looking fairly good for Conway.
9:05 – In PA 7% reporting, mostly from Philly, it is Specter 58 – Sestak 42. Philly is where Specter is doing and was expected to do his best.
9:12 – No surprise here, the AP just officially called the PA Republican primary for Pat Tommey.
9:23 – Specter is holding up pretty well. With 19% reporting it is Specter 52 – Sestak 48.
9:26 – Eli has part 3 of the election coverage.

Hi RevDeb!
Hey Loo Hoo. Been a while—on my part.
Neocons, and especially Cheney, hate Rand Paul and dad.
Loo Hoo ! RevDeb !
After tonight, will we still have Haggis to kick around ?!!
It is a decent thing. Paul is both more beatable and more likely to cross aisle if he wins on at least a few issues progressive also support.
So once Arlen goes do we finally get to crush the magic bullet theory of his? Please?
I know it! Lots of changes and great new headliners! (I’m still wondering if Cynthia isn’t LHP, though!)
Scrapple. He will have been kicked to the curb so we won’t need to pile on.
I hear that may be the case.
Oh, I agree. Can’t really pay soldiers in gold bullion, can we?
OW, the mighty OFFAL-en …
*With due apologies to punaise*
HEY Petro! How goes the battle?
We’re winning or losing, dependin’ on your perspective … *g*
{{{ Loo Hoo }}}
Hey, pups. Howdy, RevDeb.
What’s up with Tweety today going all-out moral outrage on Blumenthal. Channeling his inner Vietnam draft dodger guilt syndrome? Was it just me, or did anyone else think he was leaving the implication that he himself was one of the “in”s?
Hi Prairie! That was my thought too. I thought that Lawrence O’Donnell had talked him down, but apparently not!
(I’m still wondering if Cynthia isn’t LHP, though!)
huh. hadn’t thunk of that.
but then, sometimes I catch on kinda…………………………. slow.
Lawrence O’Donnell was terrific the other day talking about the 11 men who died in the oil blowup.
Matthews seems to engage his mouth before his brain and then won’t back off…mission accomplished.
PA returns here
I’m surprised he hasn’t resigned yet? This is something the front pagers should be covering. FDL’s vets I’m sure won’t like this.
Dood…! How’s the Great White North…? ;-)
compared to the lies we’re getting out of congress and teh WH Blumenthal is in the minor leagues.
We don’t. Had my say at Swim this mornin’. Fuck ‘im.
Hey, how did you gals do that? Saying hi in the zed position to the #2 poster?
And can we also remove Clarence Thomas from SCOTUS?
What got me wondering was the spelling in the comments. Looked somehow familiar!!
Hey, Jayt! How’s your son doing? Have you heard from Valerie yet?
U.S. Senate – Dem Primary

Kentucky – 2639 of 3575 Precincts Reporting – 74%
Name Party Votes Vote %
Conway , Jack Dem 176,184 47%

Price , Darlene Dem 20,909 6%
Sweeney , Maurice Dem 13,572 4%
Buckmaster , James Dem 12,203 3%
Conway still holding a nice lead here
Edit: from the Lousiville Courier-Journal
Yes, it was no-go Boomer guilt.
polls closed almost 50 minutes ago and so far they are only reporting about 8K votes. Something smells funny about this. Some cooking going on behind the scenes?
Jeez, Spectre is up 66%/34%.
Good point…! Mods…? What’s up with that…? ;-)
True enough. Tweety surprises sometimes, but normally….
Machines didn’t switch votes as programmed and now they’ve got to figure out what to do with real results.
2% of votes undoubtedly in the urban hellhole as Duncan calls it. Not to worry. Look at the gov results too. Williams hasn’t got a prayer and he’s way up too.
they were carrying over a conversation from the first primary thread
good eve ..all
Don’t have a handy link, but the WaPo had a long, sensitive article about the surviving families. Part of their problem is that, unlike a mining community, folks came from eleven widely-dispersed very small towns. So there’s no community of grief.
And our media has moved on.
great *g*
and nope. *s*
left over hello from previous post.
Total FDL ESP.
Agreed! Just who convinced this loser to run I thought the dems wanted Centerists who could win?
word on the street is that RevDeb has friends in High Places…
With 1% reporting…! It’s still early…! Your popcorn is all set, I presume, M’dear…? If not I’ve got some caramel-macnut coated popcorn on tap…1 *g*
http://www.bradblog.com/
Who are you pulling for,I haven’t followed the dems.
This the one?.
I could see that.
Shhhhhh!! Evening, Suz.
heh
Aloha, Suz…! Do ya have the honors tonite…!
Smoochies!
Chris Mathews amazed at the high Democratic turnout in KY.
Guy just never, ever learns.
http://www.bradblog.com/
David Adams, the campaign manager for Paul (the son of TX U.S. House Rep. Ron Paul) responded in kind to call the allegations “ridiculous” and “much ado about nothing,” before going on to blame them on Democrats somehow
And of course this little factoid will go unmentioned by the mainstream press!
Shocking.
Gosh, did you know Tweety was from Philly?
Jeez, what a maroon.
Great news High turnout and an election I think is about issues whats the GOP turnout?
I want some of your popcorn, for sure!!
will be posting lln if that is what you are asking — gotta watch lost first tho :)
Yeah, he’s been programmed to recite the “Democrats are in demoralized disarray” line so much that he’s long since given up trying to connect it to reality.
Olbermann actually just bowled Tweety over with that highly relevant factoid.
A followup factoid: (no link, sorry)
In states with two contested primaries for a single office, the high vote-getter always, always, always wins the general. Did I mention always?
http://www.bradblog.com/
Rand should point out it wasn’t us if the story is true it was Rahm. The Paulites here should talk to him.
Halter’s up 42-40 with one percent reporting. Can we call it now?!
Aloha, Mi Amigo…! Did you read that Chris Floyd article…?
Hey, does anybody know (I know Legacy Media doesn’t): will KY require a runoff if neither Democrat gets 50%?
Good! Hope I can stay awake!
Rand Paul has fewer votes than the lower vote-getting Democrat in Kentucky. The Democrats have over 300K between them and Paul has 150K by himself. This is no slam dunk for the Republicans in November, by any means. Does anyone know if Kentucky is a closed or open primary?
I think that’s only AR.
You know the rules if it looks like someone we like will win the race won’t be called until after every other race is called.
I’m always surprised by the polls saying dems aren’t fired up. Who’d want to quit now?
Conway is a reasonable person who will actually vote as a Dem on a lot of issues.
Mongiardo has just run way too far to the right in too many areas
Mrs. Greenspan now reporting on the teevee. I wish she would go away.
closed primaries in Kentucky
As far as I can remember, KY has never required anything more than receiving the most votes in a plurality.
How does the turnout compare to past closed turnout races in non presidential election years?
Aloha, brother. Not yet. Saw a link to it earlier. Will read it before the night’s over. Really, really tired of reading about war.
Rachel talking about Murtha’s replacement. My son drove thru Johnston (my mom’s, i.e. his grandmother’s home town) on the way to his move to TX in 2007. We 3 had visited it in the last year of my mom’s life in 1991. He noted that there was some sort of statue to Murtha sponsored by your fave defense corps. Even so, Johnstown is an economic horror show. So much for “pork.”
In 1991, Johnstown still had 2 churches and 2 bars on every 4 corners. BUT, with 13 steel mills at the peak, only one was still functioning in 1991 (imagine that’s closed by now). Near as I could tell, in 1991, the Johnstown economy was treating aged steel workers for brown lung disease. Lots of medical clinics.
Wow the Dowager Greenspan needs her brandy. She’s losing it.
Talking about her ‘long acquaintance’ with Arlen Spectre as if we could not tell from this AM’s blowjob on set.
Alrighty then! Conway’s ahead 46-41 with 77% reporting!
I can’t say for sure, but the numbers seem consistent with my memories.
The thing is, EVERY year is an election year in Kentucky. So there really is no such thing as an ‘off year’
The Dowager Greenspan is most irritating when she reports on the financial crisis as if it didn’t happen on her pillow-talk watch.
Uh-oh, Chuck Todd reporting surge in turnout at the end (I guess that’s what you call it when Fast Eddie Rendell flips some voting machines the right way).
“The brandy… IS life.”
Mrs. Greenspan is supporting the family. Keeping them from the food banks.
Andrea’s mad then the Center Dem’s, the GOP and the Current Wisdom are mad this is good for us:)
It is an awesome read…! Floyd truly encapsulates wtf is going on…!
Next question is Dem turnout higher?
Um, no. Alan has a well-remunerated consultancy with billionaire and ABACUS mortgage-bond-picker John Paulson.
More on Johnstown environs. My son also told me that Shanksville is a mere minutes flight from a dam, and if the terrorists had kept the plane in the air for those minutes, and it had crashed into the dam instead of the field, there would have been another Johnstown flood.
I pointed out to my son, that as many horror stories that one could create out of near misses, it is actually rarer to have the actual hits that occurred on 9/11. That’s what made 9/11 so spectacularly audacious, but also so unlikely to be repeated.
Just finished it. Phoenix Program as performed by The Crips or The Bloods.
Eli is upstairs!

You would enjoy a book we just finished here called American Rust, fiction about the increasing desperation of our fellow citizens who live there. I don’t often read fiction anymore, and recommend less, but this author is worth it.
Specter’s still ahead 54-46 with 13% reporting.
Dem turnout is higher but that may just be a reflection on how Dems have historically had a registration advantage over the years.
Even when I was growing up, Kentucky had tendencies to vote R at the senate level at least (altho when there was an R governor for the first time in 20 some years elected in ’67, there was not another R governor again for more than thirty years.)
Not yet, it ain’t. *g*
Was kidding, Teddy.
Thanks for the reference.

Sickening, no…? SNAFU…! 8-(
FUBAR
Dem Turnouts higher even with Rand in the race giving the Tea Baggers the chance to vote for the son of their real founder this is interesting if the general election goes this way.
they probably hang out at the club together
It should be disclosed on every teevee show that Andrea Mitchell is the wife of Alan Greenspan - the failed Ayn Randian (who actually dated Ayn Rand!) who helped to crash our economy with the deregulation of Banksters and his kowtowing to Bush Tax Cuts that blew Clinton’s surplus.
Just bought a used copy. I grew up in Buffalo; same problems, but less picturesque than Johnstown. Buffalo is just depressing.
Rachel is kuku tonight.
Tea Party ran out of tea. That’s what they get for drinkin’ that nasty ass Lipton Orange Pekoe anyhoo.
19% of the vote in now. Specter 52% Sestak 48%. The numbers are starting to turn.
Please try again. Sorry, folks.

He actually was one of Rand’s boy toys? Wow.
