The New York Times/CBS News poll that focused on the opinions of self-identified tea party members paints an interesting picture of people who choose the label. We know they are very white, basically 86% of the them in the pool were white non-Hispanics. As a group, they tend to be financially better off and have a high level of education compared to the general public. They are also, as a group, much older than the rest of the voting population, and are more likely to attend church and call themselves “born again” (39% among tea party members, compared with 28% among the general population).
A majority of them, 52%, feel “too much” has been made of the problem facing black people. That is significantly more than the 28% of all Americans who hold that view. They are also much more likely to oppose gay marriage and think global warming is not a real or serious problem.
For the most part, they see themselves ideologically conservative. Only 4% called themselves liberal, and only 20% identified as moderate, while 73% claimed to be somewhat or very conservative. Not surprisingly, 66% of them always or usually vote for Republicans, while only 5% would say the same about Democrats.
They love Fox News; given how hard Fox has been pushing people to adopt the label, this is not a surprise. A whopping 63% of tea partiers get most of their news from Fox News–compared to only 23% of the full survey population. And, also not surprising given how much they watch Fox News, a solid 59% of them have a favorable opinion of Glenn Beck.
An overwhelming majority, 73%, of tea party supporters believe providing government benefits to the poor encourages them to stay poor. Which is ironic because a strong majority, 62% of them, think that government programs such as Social Security and Medicare are worth their cost to taxpayers.
The most interesting result basically proves claiming T.E.A. stands for “taxed enough already” is nonsense: 46% of self-identified tea party supporters believe the main goal of the movement should be to shrink federal government. Only 6% said that lowering taxes should be the main goal. When the self-identified angry tea party supporters were asked what made them most angry, taxes barely register–a scant 2%–far below health care reform (16%), not representing the people (14%), government spending (11%), and unemployment (8%).
What they do seem to agree about–overwhelmingly–is that Obama is very liberal (77%), and that Obama’s policies are moving use toward “socialism” (92%). Not surprisingly, because they think Obama is an ultra-liberal moving the country towards socialism, 75% of them believe he does not share the values most Americans try to live by. Given that, it is no shock that 88% of them disapprove of President Obama’s job performance, and 92% have an unfavorable view of the Democratic party.
Despite wall-to-wall coverage from Fox News, and a huge fascination with the idea, it turns out most have heard “nothing” (28%) or “not much” (22%) about the “Tea Party movement.”
It would appear that the tea party movement is made up mainly of older, conservative, religious, white people who usually vote Republican. They watch a lot of Fox News and really dislike President Obama and the Democratic Party. Even if the tea party started as something different, it appears the label has been co-opted to re-brand the more familiar Fox News-style, conservative Republicans.

What is so funny about this tea party protest is that most, if not all of the protesters’ taxes have been reduced because of NOBAMA TAXCUTS. I mean THAT is not up for debate. So why are they even out there, I mean this is almost as funny as the Japanese fighting after WWII was over. But this tea party thing is nothing but a perversion of the true Boston tea partiers who were protesting taxation without representation, not TAXES!! Get the real history in context to tea party today, check out the story

Because the President is a NI****… That sums it up for all too many of them. Pitiful.
actually the original Boston Tea Party dealt with a corporation being provided a monopolistic market with no tariffs. A very early example of a predatory corporation.
Absolutely FASCINATING – Anti-Corporate, true history of the ORIGINAL Tea Party

It is true the original tea party was a fight against the corporate state/corporate welfare. Using the power of the government to win monopolistic profits.
Maybe there are some pointers we could pick up from our forefathers?
I think some, actually a lot of the poll respondents were lying about education and income.
How else can one reconcile that, A – many are on SocSec/Medicare and B – 92% think the country is going “socialist”? They have no idea what it means, so I tend to think “not-educated.”
Nonetheless, I wouldn’t expect any less from right wing ideologues.
E Pluribus Scrotum
If them Tea Partiers is collige edjukated, I’m a moran. And Glen Beck is a jeanyus.
Leave SS, Medicare and Defense alone — but cut that government spending!
Hey, that gunsmithing course Sally Struthers used to hawk on TV counts as higher education. I hear it’s the Harvard of back-of-matchbook correspondence schools.
These idiots don’t even have a real consensus on what issue they’re most concerned about. The only unifying force is their pathetic racism.
Maybe they aren’t lying about their education and income. 63% of them get most of their news from Fox News. That in itself totally explains why they believe the things they do.
Hi Kelly. My name is Sheri.I occasionaly come to FDL,and usually enjoy your post and your comments.Iam a conservative, but certainly not an ideoloque.I have never been to a teaparty, but share some of the tea party views, mostly regaurding smaller centralized government.Liberals sometimes think this means fewer social programs, which is not always the case.My view is that the social programs we do have are poorly thought out and poorly managed.Few truly benefit from the massive amount of money spent. My personal pet peeve is subsidized housing.Yuk.As a registered nurse, for over 25 yrs,in both psych and substance abuse,I frequently did home visits. These citizens do not stand a chance of remaining healty. The housing projects are filthy and crime ridden.Drugs are everywhere, while children are present. Why can’t we subsidize decent homes?Everytime I see a politician at a ribbon cutting ceremony, for one more new housing project I have an urge to slap them. Some how, some way, regaurdless of our differing opinions,we will have to come together and demand that our leaders become more accountable to the citizens. If the tea party groups can draw attention to this issue,I sat hooray for the tea partiers.
Yes that group always thinks they are smarter and make more money than what is reality. Evangelicals especially.
Also, how does 23% get all their news from GOPTV, when GOPTV only averages about 1.5-2 million viewers? Last I heard there were well over 300 million people in this country.
I’d like to see a break down of those education claims – as we have seen in arguments from physicians against “socialized” medicine, based on ignorance of facts and economics, they are an example of people with advanced, but very narrow degrees. Not necessarily educated.
Certainly possible they are inflating their education to pollsters – they really, really hate to be called dumb or ill-informed.
Of course, I live in a neighborhood of expensive houses, owned by high-earning couples – a ridiculous number of which have those stupid “No socialism” signs in their front yards. They obviously do not know what socialism is.
But it’s somewhat encouraging to see that they really are just old selfish, in-denial Republicans (smaller government but not worried about lowering taxes?) in new clothing. Even more encouraging is the small turnouts at yesterday’s Tea pary “rally” in Boston, and today’s in Washington.
Welcome to fdl. I must say, having studied the issue for many years, that the old-style high-rise, all low-income housing projects did not work well at all.
But there are many other models for “subsidized housing.” Some of those work quite well; this might, in fact, not be obvious; when they’re well-run and pleasant places to live, most people don’t even realize that a place is “subsidized.”
My only objection to your post is a feeling that you think you know what “subsidized housing” is, and that it is always that. If you dug deeper into the issue, you might find that your personal observations don’t go deep enough or broad enough to support your conclusion.
On the other hand, of course, your post may simply be an outline of your view and the reasons for it. You are welcome here if you care to discuss issues thoroughly, and back up opinion with fact.
They way I’ve heard it described is that they equate Socialism with Totalitarianism. Such as some here at FDL would describe it as Fascism.
You could be right. My experiences with subsidized housing, have been in a limited area of mid Michigan, and breifly near Portland Oregon. While I understand that any home can be subsidized, most are rental homes. Not all landlords will rent to families whose rent is subsidized, due to all the old stereotypes. But again I agree my experiences, may not be the rule.
I guess the educated ones probably don’t carry signs. Just the morans.
Or maybe those are the signs that are being photographed. That would be your average MSM coverage
Just a reminder that the teabaggers are not hillbillies and rednecks. They might be Southerners, but they’re financially well off and better educated than the average.
Erroneous Democratic and liberal stereotypes of conservatives and Republicans are crippling, causing us both to misunderstand our opponents and to neglect our friends. A recent survey showed, for example, that pro wrestling fans tend Democratic stronger than most other groups, but that they rarely vote.
If you want to, sat that Beck’s audience is mean, bigoted, selfish, self-pitying, confused, delusional, paranoid, whatever — you don’t have to like them. But if you think “Their problem is that they aren’t smart like me” you’re an idiot.
They say some things that don’t make sense — about the poor, the unemployed, and minorities, for example — just because they’re mean and angry and don’t care about the truth. But they’re not necessarily stupid about things that they really care about.
Well, I just read more hate, racism and bigotry than I’ve ever heard at a tea party rally, right here on FDL. I’ve covered them for the past 9 months for my paper, and I can guarantee you that they sound a lot more sane than the posts I just read here.
Tea Party independent of the Republican party?
Baltimore Sun ran a photo in this mornings’ edition of the Tea Party event in nearby Towson, MD.
Prominent in foreground is woman wearing an “Ehrlich for Governor” tee shirt. Ehrlich is a former Rep Gov who just announced last week he would run again this year.
Nearby was a fellow with a hand lettered sign urging votes against five leading Md politicians — all Democrats.
I don’t think they’re religious–I think church-going might be a better adjective.
